The One That Got Away?

The Antics of Some People

Lorie stood there in shock looking at her sister's fiancée. Lorie was a major hockey fan and was having trouble keeping her inner fan girl in check. The sly smile on her sister's face indicated she was waiting for Lorie to trip up and begin fawning over Sidney. Lorie could have hit herself over here head, talking to her cat in front if someone like that? Lorie assumed Megan was marrying some tool and what he thought of her was irrelevant. Megan had a decent head on her shoulders but had a thing for rich boys who were usually less than sharp. Lorie and Megan's family were well off financially, but their father insisted on putting their money in trusts to avoid them spending it all while they were young and naive.
Lorie looked up into Sidney's carmel brown eyes that were trained on her like she was the most interesting thing in the world. He had an inquisitive look on his face as he was examining the girl in front if him. From her shy smile and sparkling eyes he determined he liked what he was watching. His eyes wandered up and down her body covering each inch of her. He thought she was thin, maybe slightly too thin, had a curvy body and the most perfect face. She was breathtakingly beautiful in a natural way. She was vey different from her sister, he couldn't help but notice. Megan was stunning but not in the natural, not even trying way. The guys all approved of Megan's looks even if they thought she was slightly fake. He couldn't help but wonder what the guys would think about Lorie.
Lorie noticed Sidney's crawling eyes and was trying her best not to cower under his attentive gaze. She was never comfortable with people looking at her body. Lorie tried to avoid his mesmerizing eyes and focused her attention on her sister. Megan let her hair grow out slightly and it reached down her back nearly to her pant line. Her eyes were shiny as ever and her face was clear of all blemishes and marks. Lorie watched as men, alone or not, druled at Megan as they walked by. She may have lost some weight making her legs look longer than ever. Lorie's eyes slid down to her left ring finger and her mouth nearly fell open. The rock on her finger would cause her to drown in water. A solid princess but diamond on a band of solid smaller diamonds wrapped around her finger. It was very impressive but too flashy in Lorie's opinion, but suited Megan perfectly. Sidney had definitely outdone himself. Megan positioned the ring so the light was reflecting off it almost causing Lorie to go blind.
"How was you flight Lor?" Megan asked using Lorie's childhood nickname.
"Oh you know, same old same old." Lorie replied. "How are you Megan?" Lorie asked trying to sound pleasant.
"I'm great! Sidney and I are both really excited for the wedding. I'm glad you can help me plan!" Megan said sweetly.
"Well you know I'm always one to help." Lorie said with sarcasm oozing from her voice which Megan didn't pick up on it, but Sidney did. He tried to fight the smile that was threatening to grace his lips and the chuckle that would accompany it.
"I knew you would love to help me! It's going to be so great spending time with you!" Megan squealed.
"Yep, so great." Lorie said giving a small fist pump in the air not letting the sarcasm subside. Sidney let out a small chuckle that he covered with a cough drawing both of the girl's attention to him. He just looked back and forth between the two.
"Do you girls want to go get lunch?" Sidney asked the pair.
"I'm absolutely starved!" Lorie answered him quickly.
"What about you Megan?" Sidney asked his doting fiancée.
"I'm up for anything." Megan replied linking her arm through Lorie's. Sidney saw Lorie tense before she plastered that sweet smile on her face. Megan dragged Lorie along as she picked up Shakespeare but stopped dead in her tracks,
"Wait, what about Shakspeare?" Lorie asked sheepishly for going back on their plans.
"I told you not to bring that cat." Megan replied trying to cover up her seriousness with a small chuckle.
"Why don't we drop him off at home?" Sidney asked Lorie. Lorie's smile was instant and warmth spread all over her body. She was touched that he would compromise his plans to help her. He didn't have to do that even though Megan had put up a minor fuss already.
"Are you sure?" Lorie asked spectically. Sidney looked over at her. He was surprised at how uncomfortable she was changing plans. She didn't seem like she enjoyed disappointing people and that intrigued him.
"Positive." Sidney replied smiling down at the petite woman standing next to his much taller fiancée. Megan began grumbling some complaints under her breath only loud enough that Lorie barley heard. The trio began walking out of the air port, Sidney keeping his head down trying to avoid attention, towards the car. Sidney watched as the two girls walked in front of him. They were so differ from one another. Sidney was told by Megan, Lorie's mom walked out on the family because she didn't want Lorie. Apparently Lorie was a princess in her father's eyes and Megan and Chantal weren't treated fairly or equally. Megan described Lorie was slightly overweight which was a surprise to him because if anything she was underweight. Lorie was also much prettier than he expected.
The drive to the house was full of small talk between the sisterly and Sidney sat and listened trying to remember every detail he could about Lorie. She was egnamitic, he never could decide who or what she was. Every detail and sly sarcastic comment she made caused him to like her even more. He could tell she was smart and intellectual from the way she talked. He couldn't remember but he thought Megan mentioned she was a writer and an editor. She was fired from her job and that's why she was here to help plan the wedding. He couldn't help but wonder what she had done to get fired.
When Sidney pulled into the driveway of his house Lorie was in shock. The house was breathtaking and incredible. The coffee creamed exterior, dark brown trim, and bay windows were incredible. She was in absolute awe as she stepped out of the car. There was a stone walkway and plant beds that added to the grand scale of the house.
"Sidney your house is incredible." Lorie breathed. Sidney looked over at Lorie who was admiring the house with wide eyes. Sidney was surprised because Megan didn't like the house that much, despite his love for the house, and Lorie seemed as entranced in the house as he was. He smiled over at her.
"Really?" he asked her.
"The house was absolutely incredible!" Lorie replied looking at the house again.
Sidney decided that Lorie was somebody he was going to enjoy getting to know.
