It's Time to Rock the Dragon

Chapter five

“You may now pick your partners. Of course the task requires boy-girl” The teacher informed us, after explaining everything about the project to us.

Dammit! I was now going to be completely alone. Jess and Jasper were obviously going to go together, leaving me to be humiliated because I’ll have no partner. Then I’ll have to quietly go up to the teacher and claim to have no partner, only for the teacher to shout at the class that I don’t have a partner and if anyone would be my partner.

Just like how things were in Domino.

On cue, Jess and Jasper looked at each other, then looked at me and sent me a sympathetic look.

“Hehe, you guys can see if you’d last if you really did have a baby. This will be amusing!” I replied brightly, in an attempt to throw them off.

They smiled at me, and Jess looked around as if trying to find me a partner.

They didn’t have to look far.

“MISS! GOHAN DOESN’T HAVE A PARTNER!” Videl shouted out at the teacher.

“Is this true Gohan?” The teacher asked.

Gohan opened his mouth up to reply, but I quickly cut him off

“-No miss, I’m Gohan’s partner.”

The teacher gave Videl a disproving look, as she continued to get the babies ready.

“I’ll never understand your attraction to that kid. But at least you have a partner I guess.” Jess shrugged.

I blushed at the word ‘attraction’ certainly she doesn’t know about my crush on Gohan, does she? No, she can’t. She hated Gohan nearly as much as Videl. I’d never live it down if she knew.

Gohan moved from his seat next to Videl to the seat next to mine, which was empty. This whole row was always empty, except for Jess, Jasper and I.

Jess gave Gohan a glare, gave me a pat on the shoulder and moved a few seats down from me.

“Thanks for being my partner. Videl was really being mean, but I guess you showed her.” Gohan weakly smiled at me.

“Eh, no worries. I obviously had no partner either, but to be honest you’re pretty much the only person who I’d want to be my partner.” I informed Gohan.

“Aw Charlotte, that’s a nice thing to say. You’re the only person I’d want to be my partner. I was actually kind of hoping you’d ask.” Gohan said.

I could see a blush rise in his pale cheeks, and I knew that my cheeks were mirroring his actions. What made it even more…awkward/embarrassing was the use of the word ‘partner’

“The babies are now activated. You may now spend the rest of the lesson bonding with your partner and the baby. Not only will this raise the happiness rate of the baby, but you will need that time to work out arrangements with your partner. Come grab one as you walk out, but don’t leave the school yard.” The teacher sighed.

Nearly everybody in the class stampeded to the front to grab one of the mechanical babies. Gohan and I only strolled down; they all looked the same so we were in no rush to become parents.

“Where should we go?” Gohan asked, as we were entering the schoolyard.

I watched the scene in front of me. Already the students were yelling around, screaming at the chance of freedom, instead of being cooped up in the lecture hall. Some were tossing their babies around; others were pretending to be cruel to them. Already the babies were crying.

“This is so pathetic. They may not be real babies, but they represent the care and love you’re meant to give a baby. I hope these people never become parents.” Gohan snarled, and I clutched the fake baby closer to my chest.

“Let’s go someplace else. Hey, is there a rooftop here?” I asked Gohan.

“There sure is, why do you ask?” Gohan asked me.

About two minutes later, Gohan and I ended up on the rooftop.

“What made you think of the rooftop?” Gohan asked, as we sat down to lean against a wall.

“It’s kind of stupid really. Just, the rooftop is a quiet place. At my old school with my old friends, we used to always go to the rooftop when we needed to think.” I admitted.

“Hey I never asked you, where did you come from? Why did you move schools?” Gohan asked me.

“Um, yeah it’s alright. I moved here from Domino High School, in Domino City. My parents got new jobs and stuff.” I said nervously, picking at fluff on the baby’s diaper to avert my nervous gaze.

“Domino City, wow that’s a big move. But you went to Domino High? I nearly went there.” Gohan stated.

“Really? Why?” I asked, a little bit shocked.

“Well um, I live in East District. It’s kind of in a triangle shape with Domino City and Satan City. Mum and I kind of checked out both, but Mum was a lot more impressed with the environment of Orange Star so I ended up here.” Gohan smiled, but looked a little nervous too.

I had two things in my head to say to Gohan. One was a question about how the hell he got here and why he would bother, and the second was a statement. I decided to go with the statement.

“Well, if we have to do activities together regarding this baby, you’re coming to me. I am not travelling 6 hours.” I stated, but grinned to show Gohan I was only joking.

He only weakly smiled back, but seemed relieved. Maybe he’s sick of people giving him grief for living so far away? I think I’ll let the two questions I have for him slide.
