The Letters

June 20, 2003

Hello Mags,

Do you know how happy that makes me that you have a new friend there? I’m so glad that you have a new friend that is just like you. I know you wanted somebody that understands how you feel, being deaf.

My new friend is not from Philadelphia. She is just visiting her grandparents down the road. Her name is Gabrielle. She doesn’t speak either but I don’t think she is embarrassed to be deaf. I think she is very proud. Her signing are crazy fast and sometime I have to ask her to repeat herself. But I think it is very smart of you to try learn how to speak. I know that you have been taking speech therapy and it have definitely been working. I just hope that you are using your voice more and more. That’s the only way you can learn how to speak.

I’ve never eaten Maryland blue crabs so I don’t know how to eat them. But I heard a lot of good things about it. Maybe you can teach me how to eat them. I can’t wait to see you and meet your new friend too!

Today I went to checkers to grab some food. Then it made me think of you because we had always met there to walk back home from school.

I miss you a lot!

Love,
Gus
