Alive

Introduction

When I first met Jesse, I was five, and he was seven. I had just moved in across the street, and he welcomed me by accidentally hitting me in the head with a basketball. I kicked him in the shin, he chased me down the street, and we were best friends.

We were cute kids, growing up. We played basketball and tried to create our own language and held onto each other for dear life. I guess, we weren’t like most kids on the block. He was stuck in a nightmare with an abusive father and a drug-addict brother, while I was an only child, raised by a struggling single father. Both of us without a mother. Both of us struggling. Both of us, in all of our blissful innocence, were completely unaware of what life would look like in fifteen years.

Life was simple back then. Now…Well, now I don’t even know which way is up. I’m trying to save someone who doesn’t want to be saved, and holding myself together with Xanax. And the sad part? I don’t know how we ended up here. Well, I do. Kind of. Maybe I should just start from the beginning…

Oh, and my name is Kalina, by the way.
