I Was Hoping You'd Ask

Chapter 5

I was sitting with Dan while watching the game, he thought it would be a good idea for me to watch him talk to some players for a couple of games and then do the post game interviews. I was more than pleased with this. As we watched the games Dan gave me a bunch of ideas to ask for the post game interview and how to ask the questions depending on the outcome.

Obviously talking to one of the players after a loss would be a little difficult but the fans still want to hear something, I know I did when I watched all of the interviews myself after each game.

The game was a very interesting one, we won the game 4-3 in OT and I was thrilled to be the one to talk to the person who scored the game-winning goal… Brian Gibbons.

The interview went more than well. I knew exactly what to ask him and he replied without making me feel stupid for any of the questions I asked, which is the worst thing that could happen to a reporter. I couldn’t breathe the whole time, which I think he could tell because after the cameras cut off, Gibbons stayed by.

I was a little shocked to see him stick around and I think he could tell I was confused because of what he stuck around to say. “Not bad for your first interview, glad it got to be me.” I couldn’t believe what he just said; I just stared for a second. “I really appreciate it, I was actually hoping you would be the first one I got to interview” I replied to him. He gave me a smirk that just made my heart melt because it was so cute. “Really?” he asked a little confused. “Yeah, you’re my favorite player from WBS and every time you got called him I couldn’t wait to watch you play.” This was the most I had said to a player since I had gotten to meet them and I was afraid it was too much at once but I was a little happy because it made the atmosphere a little more comfortable. He just smiled at me again and we were interrupted by the screams in the locker room, “where Gibby?!” I knew it was Geno who screamed it because of the broken English. We both looked at the locker room door at the same time and then back at each other, “I should probably get in there I guess” we both laughed and I nodded in a agreement “See ya, Gibby” I smiled and said as he walked into the locker room, he just looked back with an amused look on his face and put his stick in the air as a good bye.

I couldn’t believe I just had a conversation with Brian Gibbons. I had wondered if the conversation had meant as much to him as it did to me but I highly doubt it. I was too excited to think anything negative though.

I could feel my phone in my pockets blowing up with pictures of me on the television from family members and friends and a bunch of text messages congratulating me. I was smiling to myself and then Dan surprised me. “I know the feeling,” he said to me, assuming that he knew exactly what I was looking at on my phone. He told me that I did a wonderful job on my first interview and that he just got off the phone with our boss telling him how pleased he was with me. I couldn’t believe so many great things were happening in one day. Can it get any better?
