"You've been talking to yourself for quite a while," Ray said as he entered the room. Leaning against the wall, his arms crossed, he asked, "Are you sure you're all right?"

"I'm fine," I said. "Just tired, you know."

Tired and unbearably guilty.

His mouth twitched a bit. "How about some coffee? You could probably use it after the last few days you've had."

I forced a smile. "Okay."

"Maybe you can tell me the truth about what happened out there," he said, staring at me. "I know that John Hayes had influence over many people, but I don't think that you were one of them."

An image flashed in my mind: Ray, blood gushing from his chest, his eyes on me.

Helpless.

I have to keep my secret safe.
