John showed up with the darkness that night.

"I can't kill Ray," I whispered. "Please understand that."

"You don't have a choice," John snapped. "You have to get rid of everyone who will find out your secret."

"It was an accident," I told him, looking away.

"No, it wasn't." John's mouth twisted. "You were angry at her. She'd stolen something from you, and you wanted it back." He leaned closer. "A knife to the neck is personal, Charlotte. You should know that."

I closed my eyes. He wasn't real, I knew that.

"Did you like my present?" he asked suddenly.

I opened my eyes and looked at him. "You sent them to me," I whispered. "Why would you do that?"

"Because you need to see," John hissed, grabbing my jaw. "You've always had this inside of you—this need."

"Get out of my face," I ground out.

John smirked. "You will never be rid of me, darling. Do you understand? You will never be alone. No matter what you do, we will always be with you."
