The Babysitter

Pardon The Way I Stare

Zacky drove home that night with a smile on his face when he thought of the term secret girlfriend. He felt like a spy, well not a spy specifically, but he liked keeping the secret. It was exciting to him. As he thought about Wynonna, he felt his beeper vibrate on his pants. It was Brian, it said home but that was about it. He turned around at the street in front of him and made his way to Brian's house. When he arrived, he entered and said hello to Brian's father and step mother before he walked up to his room to see that Mac was sitting on his bed playing with her dolls.

“Hi Zacky.” She greeted, giving him a toothy grin.

“Hey kiddo.” He smiled, sitting at the end of bed and looking at his troubled friend, “What's up with you?”

“Lonely.” Brian sighed.

“Thought that's why you had a girlfriend.”

“You can only date someone for so long until you get bored.”

“You say that about all your girlfriends. I'm thinking you're just incompatible.”

“I'm just bored of everything.”

“Maybe you have chronic fatigue syndrome.”

“I wouldn't be surprised, all I do is sleep lately. But seriously, I'm bored when I'm in a relationship and I'm bored when I'm not.”

“You're just not a happy guy, are you?”

“Dunno.” He sighed, I think I have senioritis.”

“That's not a thing.”

“How would you know, Mister I-Dropped-Out-Of-School.”

“Good point.” He added.

“What senioritis?”

“Something you won't have for a good...what, sixteen years?” Zacky asked Brian.

“About yeah.” He sighed, shifting in his bed so that he was on his back, looking at the ceiling.

“Dude, you don't look tired, you looked bummed. Like, super bummed.”

“I'm not though, that's the thing,” Brian explained, “I just feel like, sleeping. Whatever, I don't wanna talk about it. How is your thing with Wynonna.”

“Haven't talked to her since the day I last babysitted her.” He lied.

“Babysat.”

“What?”

“The correct term is babysat.”

Zacky rolled his eyes, “Yeah whatever.”

“So it's been a whole month?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“You're fuckin' up.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, that freshmen is the best thing that ever happened to you.”

“I think you're exaggerating.”

“Am I really Zachary?”

“Yes, you really are.”

“Bri, help me brush Barbie's hair.” McKenna asked, handing her the blonde barbie with a brush.

“Of course.” He smiled, taking the pink plastic brush and running through the fake blonde hair, “So, you haven't made any attempts to talk to her?”

“Talk to who?” McKenna asked, looking at her brother with a curious look.

“Not you, Booger.” Zacky smiled, “Anyway, not really. Should I?”

“Are you still in denial you piece of shit?”

“You said a bad word!”

“Boohoo, you gonna tell Dad?”

“Yeah, I'm going right now!” She announced, hopping off the queen bed and running down the stairs.

Brian rolled his eyes and put his attention back to his friend, “Denial.”

“I'm not in denial. I don't like her, we're friends.”

“You're so full of shit.”

“And so are you, clinically depressed dipshit.”

“I am not clincally depressed. I will fucking drop kick you.”

“Are you in denial too?”

Brian sighed, “Alright, I get it.”

“Good. If we've finished talking about my love life then I'm leaving.”

“Wynonna is apart of your love life?” Brian grinned.

Zacky rolled his eyes and got off the bed, “I'm leaving.”

“If you're going to secretly meet up Wynonna, tell her I said hi.”

I already did. “Fuck off, Brian.”

“I love you too.” He laughed, snuggling in his sheets and falling asleep.

Zacky rolled his eyes and walked down the stairs, where he saw McKenna watching TV, he called out to Brian Sr and told him goodbye. He walked out of the door and made his way to his car, he was tired. He thought about Brian and his moodiness and he thought of Wynonna and their secret relationship. But all of the thinking had caused him harm, for when the light turned green, Zacky continued on without noticing the car that decided to go on a head.

He didn't feel anything.

All he felt was a slightly pain in his side.

Then, darkness and faint visions of the ambulance, the last thing he saw before drifting off was the sight of his car and a body bag being zipped.
