Let the Walls Break

1. All Signs Point To Tonsfield

Slamming the car door behind me with my foot, boxes piled up in my arms, I made my way up to the red front door of my new house.
I don't really like change and moving halfway across the world is a pretty big change if you ask me. I used to live in a town called Baltimore which is situated in Maryland, United States, obviously. Having grown up there it was where all my memories were, but also where everything went wrong.

"Jack, honey, have you emptied the car yet?" my mom called from the kitchen. Placing the boxes I was carrying on the counter, she turned around giving me a tired smile. "Thanks Jacky, if you want you can unpack your stuff. I'm ordering pizza tonight because I'm too tired to cook." I lent in and kiss her on the cheek before making my way up the stairs. She was taking the move really well, but I couldn't help feeling guilty as it was my fault we were here.

Turning left at the top of the narrow staircase, I headed for the door at the end of the hallway. This house was a lot smaller than I was used to but we didn't need any bigger now that it was just the two of us.
I opened the door, revealing more steps, which led to the attic which was my new room. It was fairly spacious, the ceiling was sloped, walls white like the rest of the house. My room has two windows: one looking out on the small garden below and the identical house facing us ours, but more importantly the large skylight.
At my other house I used to climb the tree in my garden to get on to the roof where I would just sit and stare at the sky, either watching the sunrise or set, or just watching the stars. It was my little escape from the world. Having the skylight would mean easy access to the roof, no tree climbing involved.
Currently there were boxes strewn around the room, I never realised how much stuff I had till I was packing it up back in Baltimore. I started opening up boxes, one after another, searching for my stereo, which of course was in the last box I looked in. Along with the stereo was my vast music collection. I picked out my favourite Blink-182 album (Take Off Your Pants And Jacket) and went to plug the stereo in.
"fuck!" I exclaimed. England has different plugs, how could I forget. Giving up on the task at hand, I got up off the floor and proceeded to open up the skylight. It was a little stiff from lack of use but with a good push it opened with a loud squeaking sound. Climbing through the opening.
It was cold up here on the tiled roof but couldn't be bothered to go back in for a hoodie. I looked around at the scenery. Tonsfield is basically a small town on the outskirts of, well, I don't really know. I know its close to a large town as we drove through it on the way here.
This was nothing like Baltimore.
Take the houses for example; they were small and squished together, each looked almost identical to another. Looking out at the vast, empty hills surrounding the town you would think they would have built them more spaced out.
The sun was beginning to disappear behind the distant hills, covering everything in a orangey pink glow.
I pulled out my iPod and soon Always by Blink -182 was flowing through my headphones into my ears.
This is the most relaxed I have been in a long time.
