Your eyes were the best teachers I ever had
I learned things I never knew existed
About who you were
And who I thought you were going to be
It was bliss

Your eyes used to tell me stories
Of places you wanted to go
Faraway lands with no one but us
Alone with me
Alone together

They used to show me how you felt
Your biggest emotional giveaway
Happy, loving, sad, and everything between
When you were angry your eyes would darken
And do so as well when you craved me at four AM

When we sat alone on a Friday night
With just the surrounding smoke of joints to accompany us
Your eyes would stare at me in wonder
I might have been your mystery to solve
You were mine
But your eyes didn't show that

Your eyes used to shine
My favorite color alight with the spark of life
Like a million tiny stars lived in the orbs of coffee brown

Your eyes taught me how to trust
They showed me you cared
You would always care
At times too much for your own good

I haven't been able to trust now
For how long, I don't know exactly
I don't see the care
But I must think
To be fair
That it is there

Have the stars burned out
Because your eyes don't shine as bright
When you look at me
They don't sparkle

Your eyes show me how you feel
But the number of emotions has come down
Drastically
In the morning you are tired
By midday you are bored
And at night when I tell you I love you
As we lay in our cold bed, in our cold bedroom
Your eyes are closed
You are asleep

The stories I read through your eyes
Are not as fun
As they were when we were young
There is nowhere to go that is far away
Far away is where we already are
Or perhaps, just you

Your eyes don't stare in wonder
Or in lust or in love
They don't stare at all much, rather glance
And that is all

Your eyes have changed with you
Some of me thinks that you have seen
More than you can bear
Something to take away the emotion
The vividity and the innocence
Of needing a place to get away to
Alone with me
