Keep on Going

Hey stranger

Kacey shifted in her seat as much as she could without knocking the bag of ice off her ankle. She hadn't even attempted to move in two days in fear of finding out it really was broke. The swelling had in fact went down even if her foot was now a bruised purple color. Guess she couldn't really be picky at the moment and she would take that over having a cast.

"How are you doing?" Abby asked as she took a seat next to her friend. She honestly felt bad about the whole situation despite how it seemed to Kacey.

"Besides the fact that I hate you and I hate nature more than ever before, I'd say I'm doing amazing." She responded sarcastically and Abby rolled her eyes, "I really am sorry. Seriously, see if you can put any pressure on it. If so, I'm taking you to lunch."

"No offense but you've damaged me enough. Eating at one of those healthy, nasty restaurants isn't going to make me feel any better."

Abby rolled her eyes, "Actually I think I've done enough damage so I'm offering In-N-Out as as a peace offering."

"You're going to eat In-N-Out?! Well shit, I'm going just to watch that!" She said as she removed her foot from the table, the bag of ice hitting the floor.

Abby rolled her eyes at the girl's remark although it was basically true. Abby was a health nut you could say and Kacey well, let's just say she was grateful for good genes otherwise Abby would know how bad she really ate and how little she actually worked out.

Kacey prepared herself for the hurt that awaited her as she slowly put her foot on the ground now that she was standing.

Thankfully none ever met her and she sighed a breath of relief.

"Well?" Abby said waiting patiently and Kacey looked over at her, "It's sore but I'm pretty certain it's not broken and that I can at least walk now."

"Great! Let's head out then!"

"Ok but I can't walk THAT fast." She mumbled out as she slid on a shoe carefully.

"Right." Abby responded slowing down once she reached the door. Kacey chuckled as she reached her and they both walked out to Abby's car.

It was funny that the pair were not only roommates but best friends simply because they were both completely different. Kacey was honestly surprised it had lasted this long although she was grateful for it. Abby always pushed her when she needed it, even if she didn't necessarily want it that is and she liked to think that she calmed Abby down a bit. She was always in to order and things being in a certain way and Kacey couldn't help but realize how much more relaxed Abby had gotten over the years. At least she was good for something. A hiking partner may not have been one of those things, but still...

"Oh man. I can't believe it's come to this." Abby groaned and Kacey couldn't help but laugh, "This has made my day I tell you that much. So thanks for that."

"I'm so glad." Her friend mumbled as they went to order.

As she waited, trying to decide what to order, her thoughts were interrupted by an unfamiliar voice.

"Awe, my damsel in distress is alive still."

She spun around on her heels only to see the boy from her traumatic hiking experience. A grin lined his lips and he definitely looked more put together than she recalled. His hair was well groomed and the plaid shirt draped over his body seemed like it was made for him. Maybe she did realize how cute he was during their last encounter but she definitely couldn't ignore it now. It probably helped that her foot was in working condition and she could actually focus on other things now.

She immediately scoffed at his remark, "It's actually Kacey and please. I let you save me. You're welcome."

His grin then turned into a full on smile, which she knew was contagious so she tried not to think about it.

"Oh is that how you recall it happening, Kacey?"

"Something around that nature." She mumbled and he now laughed. Abby was now staring at the pair which didn't seem to phase him any.

"Oh, is this your sucky friend who left you to die?" He asked and Abby groaned, "It's Abby and just so you know, I would have found her eventually!"

Kennedy laughed once more at the look Kacey was giving her friend.

"Let's just say she's never pressuring me into anything ever again."

"Yeah, you never take a girly girl hiking, Abby. I'm Kennedy by the way." He joked and Kacey glared at him, "A girly girl?"

"Yes. You're a girly girl." He replied coolly as he reached out for her hand. Kacey immediately grew nervous as he spoke, "See."

"My nails are painted and that makes me a girly girl?! I'm afraid not."

Abby scoffed from beside her causing Kennedy to smile, "There's nothing wrong with it."

She couldn't help the nerves that filled her stomach from this whole encounter. Great. She had made such an impression that he's probably told all his friends about the stupid girl he had to save because she was too girly to be in the woods. The thought alone was embarrassing. She would be ok with never seeing the guy again.

"This is a very sexist theory." She stated and he laughed as he released her hand gently.

"It's not sexist! It's an observation!"

"It is sexist. So, Abby not wearing fingernail polish makes her manly?"

"Definitely not, but it means she's not afraid to get dirty."

"I went hiking. That should mean I'm clearly not afraid of getting dirty."

"You had your iPhone in your hand when I rescued you." He smirked and she threw her hands up, "I was trying to find someone to save me!"

Kennedy clearly found this more amusing than her as he continued to laugh and although she found his laugh adorable she managed to keep a serious face.

"Ok, ok. I believe you." He replied, backing down from the conversation.

Kacey rolled her eyes before speaking, "Alright well if we are done reminiscing, I'm going to order my food and sit down."

"I should get back to my friends. Do you think you can make it to a table in one piece or...." He joked causing Abby to laugh and Kacey groaned before lightly pushing him back.

"Go."

"It was really nice to see you again, Kacey." He replied, flashing her a smile before leaving the two alone.

She didn't have to even look at Abby to know the girl was now staring at her. She could feel her staring a hole into her.

"Shut up." She finally grumbled out and thankfully she didn't have to hear a response because it was her turn to order.

Once at a table, Kacey tried not to be obvious about seeing if the boy and his so called friends were sitting nearby but she had to at least be prepared. She honestly didn't know if she could handle that at the moment. Her worrying of course was interrupted by Abby and she didn't know what was worse.

"So...that boy..."

"Drop it."

"He's really cute, Kace."

"So is every member of One Direction and yet that means nothing to me."

Abby rolled her eyes, "Oh come on! This is a real guy, Kacey. And might I add, a funny guy who seems interested in you."

"Are you serious right now?" She asked with a raised eyebrow, "He is not interested in me. He clearly finds my misfortune amusing so I guess that's some sort of interest but, not the kind I think you want it to be."

"But why can it not be?!"

"Because I don't know the guy! This is literally the second time I've ever laid eyes on him!"

"So?! You need to take a chance for once!"

"Oh how so? Invite him to sit with us like this is high school?"

"No." She replied with a roll of her eyes, "But maybe an exchange of numbers wouldn't have hurt."

"No. Plus, the last time I took a chance I almost ended up with a broken leg so maybe you should keep the pep talks on the low end for now."

Abby rolled her eyes, "Fine."

The pair ate in silence of course Kacey was over analyzing everything in her head. Abby always made her do that and she hated it. She was content with not giving the boy a second thought but it was different now.

"I'm sure I'll be seeing you around." She heard, looking over to see Kennedy who briefly laid his hand on her shoulder. A smile lit his face before walking away with a group of loud boys.

Abby looked up at her and she tried to ignore it the best she could but the thing about Kacey was she was one of those hopeless romantic types. The ones who dreamed of meeting their dream guy in the most odd place and he whisking her away and they live happily every after. She knew how far fetched it was though so that's why she tried to think realistically about everything. Otherwise she would fall into everything Abby wanted her to do simply because her heart wanted to do the same.

Unfortunately though she couldn't control the rapid beating of her heart at the moment. She didn't know this Kennedy guy at all. So why was this even an issue? Surely she would never see him again after this and all these thoughts and feelings she was having would just go away.
