In a world at war between good and evil: the suncasters (casters of gold magic) and nightcasters (casters of black magic), 16-year-old Scarlet Rosa seems to be the only nightcaster with a good heart. But when the goodness in her heart drives her to begin practicing gold magic, she is discovered and sentenced to death. However, she is saved by a suncaster boy named Max Falcon, who brings her back to his home where she is introduced to new people, new places, and an entirely new way of life. Now, she must train to be a suncaster and face off against her former people. Action, adventure, suspense, and romance all come together as bonds are formed amongst companions and intense battles of magic and weaponry mix into blood as black as the darkest heart.

Scarlet Rosa has betrayed her people, the nightcasters, by practicing gold magic in the hopes of mastering it in the stead of black magic, and is now being brought to her death. She arrives at the ceremony where she is to be tortured and exicuted.
