High on Summertime

She's Cute Too

“Mm, what’s that smell?” Lemon asked looking around the kitchen for the source.

“Blueberry buckle,” her mom told her.

“Oh, yummy!”

“It’s not for you,” her mom laughed.

Lemon pouted and stared at the dish. “Why not?”

“It’s for Ms. Rodgers and her granddaughter.”

“Oh,” Lemon sighed. “Well alright.”

“Will you stop by there before work?”

“Sure but mom? Can you make another for me, please?”

“Sure sweetheart.”

Lemon smiled and gave her mom a hug. “Thank you.”

Lemon was mostly ready for work already; her hair was straightened and she had already put on some make-up. Now all she had to do was pick out her outfit. She looked through her closet before finally deciding on a cream skater skirt and a blue denim buttoned tank tucked into the skirt. She picked out her tan sandals and grabbed her purse from beside her bed.

“Mom is there anything else you need me to bring?”

“No, just the blueberry buckle. Have a good day at work.”

“Thanks mom, see you later.”

Lemon carefully carried the breakfast to her bright yellow Volkswagen bug, a graduation gift from her grandparents. She drove the short distance to Ms. Rodgers’ apartment complex. She didn’t see her car in the lot but she hoped Charlie would be up. Lemon walked up the flight of stairs and knocked on the door a few times and stood back, rocking back and forth on her heels.

Finally the door opened and Charlie was standing there glaring; her hair was in a bun but most of it had fallen down while she slept, her tank top was one size too small and her shorts showed off her long legs. Lemon’s breath caught in her throat but she took a deep breath and smiled.

“Morning,” Lemon greeted with a smile. Charlie just grunted in response. “My mom made you guys blueberry buckle.”

“Tell her we said thank you,” Charlie tried to smile as she took the dish from Lemon.

When Charlie turned to go back inside Lemon saw more skin than necessary and really, Lemon needed to get out of there.

“Okay well have a good day.”

“Thanks, you too.”

Lemon rushed to her car and tried to forget all about Charlie and her cute pajamas.

-

Charlie put the dish on the counter and went back to her bed. She wasn’t sure if she would be able to sleep but she wanted to ry. Her body was still sent on San Diego time so when she fell asleep around four it would have been one back home. Lemon knocked on her door around 10:15 which would be 7:15 in San Diego. She tossed and turned for a few tossed and turned for a few minutes but the sun was shining too bright for her liking so she took a blanket from the bed and tacked it over the window. Charlie practically fell on top of her bed and sighed into her pillow, finally feeling like she could fall back asleep.

When Charlie woke up again it was one and she actually felt rested for the first time since being in Tennessee. She quite literally rolled out of bed and made her way into the kitchen. She forgot all about her encounter with Lemon until she saw the breakfast on the counter. Charlie wasn’t awake enough earlier to worry about her appearance but now that she’s actually up she couldn’t help but worry. She doesn’t necessarily care that Lemon saw her in her pajamas it’s just that her pajamas were a bit skimpy and she definitely wasn’t wearing a bra.

There was nothing she could do about it now so she just cut herself some breakfast and went back to her room to waste the day away.

-

Lemon first had the idea in the beginning of her shift and now it’s the end of it and she still couldn’t decide what she wanted to do. She had plans to hang out with her best friend Natalie, Natalie’s boyfriend and his best friend and thought it might be nice to invite Charlie along. Lemon only saw her twice but she had a feeling she didn’t have any plans for the summer and she must be bored from staying in all day. Lemon figured there would be no harm in asking and the worst Charlie could say is no which Lemon had a feeling Charlie would decline anyway.

So before Lemon went home she stopped at Ms. Rodgers’ apartment and hoped Charlie would be dressed this time. Which, she still wasn’t but at least now she had a bra on.

“Hey does your mom want her dish back? We haven’t finished it but I could just transfer it to another plate,” Charlie rattled off.

“No, she doesn’t. Well when you’re done she does but not now. Uhm, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out with me and my friends tonight. We’re going bowling and I don’t know, I thought I would see if you wanted to come.”

“Oh,” Charlie looked taken aback. “I can’t but thanks for inviting me.”

Lemon knew she would say no but she was a little disappointed but she wasn’t quite sure why she felt that way.

“It’s no problem.”

“I’m sorry about this morning by the way. I probably came off really rude. I haven’t been getting much sleep so I’m sorry.”

Lemon couldn’t help but smile. “It’s alright. I didn’t mean to wake you up.”

“It’s alright, it was worth it.” Lemon’s heart rate sped up. “The blueberry buckle is delicious. Tell your mom we said thank you.”

“Yeah of course. Well I should get going.”

“Okay, have fun tonight.”

“Thanks, see you later.”

“Yeah bye.”

Charlie smiled and finally closed the door, walking back into the living room.

“Who was at the door?”

“Lemon.”

“Oh, what did she want? The dish back?”

“No, not yet anyway. She invited me to hang out with her and her friends.”

“You said no?”

“Yeah.”

“Why? You should go. Get out of the house and have some fun.”

Charlie shrugged. “I don’t know I just didn’t want to go.”

“Charlie you can’t stay in the house all day for the rest of summer. Lemon is a nice girl; you should hang out with her. She’s cute too,” her grandmother winked.

“Grandma!” Charlie yelled.

“What? Do you think I don’t know?”

“Well yes actually.”

“Oh honey, your mother told me months ago.” Charlie didn’t know what to say, she was just shocked her grandmother knew. “I don’t care.”

“You don’t care?”

“Sweetheart, my job is laying off people, I still can’t retire for another two years, my AC is on the fritz, my daughter and granddaughter live too far from me and I have to go to the doctor every three months. I don’t have enough time to worry about you not liking boys. You’re a smart and beautiful girl. Anyone is lucky to date you, as long as they don’t hurt you.”

“Wow, okay. Thank you, I guess. I love you, grandma.”

“I love you too sweetheart and please just think about getting out of the house.”

“Okay, okay I will.”
