Status: An Adventure novel isn't always about war and death. Heros can't be made by dystopian novels. Kailyn is an everyday girl from Detroit and she is still a hero.
Life in the Dust
Chapter I: After It All
A pain I my stomach erupted, a good one. I couldn't stop laughing. Me and my friends were just cracking jokes in the lunch room. My group was made of seven people, Heather, Nikolas, Dame, Sammie, Gemma, Oliver and me, Kailyn. It's been two months since that dreadful day, but I never paid attention towards it.
I smiled widely, I was happy being in Pittsburgh. It was a new beginning. I felt Gemma hit my arms playfully as Nikolas started back up with his hilarious story. Gemma always known that I had a teeny tiny crush on Nikolas, but of course I never showed it. Nikolas was one of those so-called players, I didn't want to be involved.
Oliver stole some glances at Nikolas as he told the story and Dame's eyes never left his phone. Heather was too into the story while Sammie played with her food a bit. I was lucky to be in their group, they were so welcoming. Gemma was the one I spent my time with most. After three weeks of the first day, Gemma and I made it officially that we had a best friend bond.
Heather was one of those fan-girls, but it fit her nicely. She wasn't annoying, she was actually really cool. Her adorable girly side always grabbed my attention, especially when it was about the nerdy stuff. Heather's short and blonde hair was cute and stylish. Her blue eyes matched the sky on a sunny day, especially with the specks of white, that looked like clouds.
Sammie was a little inside the box. Sammie's personality was a bit mysterious, but we still knew bunches about her. Her long brown hair reached the middle of her back, which made me all kinds of jealous.
Dame wasn't very sociable, unless you count texting sociable. Dame's black hair and dark blue eyes made him look badass and cool. His sense of style was always calming and hot, and his sweet personality topped him off. Dame has always had a little thing for Sammie and Gemma, both, but somehow only I'd seen it.
Oliver was sweet and smart, and gay. Luckily, he'd never hit on the guys at our table, only the bi in our school, Evan, but he hasn't noticed Oliver one bit which pissed me off. Oliver was innocent and made of kindness, I remember the first week I was there, Oliver, Dame and Nikolas gave me a card and teddy, Oliver's idea.
Nikolas was funny and actually not a jerk. The jerk in him only came out when he got defensive, which made him ten times hotter. Gemma and him used to be close before I didn't arrive into Pittsburgh, but Nikolas never got mad at me for "stealing his friend".
Gemma reminded me too much like Natasha. Her black hair naturally curled into perfect curls and she never wore makeup, her pale skin was pretty and her eyelashes were naturally long and beautiful. Gemma's personality could be summed up into one word, perfect. Gemma never judged and she always spoke her mind, no matter how much the truth hurt. Gemma had a sweet side that covered her evil side which only came out when needed.
Then there was me. I never really thought about my personality much after the incident. Only words described me, like broken, funny, weird; the simple characteristics. I have to admit, every one of my friends made everything easier for me, which made me glad to have them.
"Kailyn." I heard Gemma sing next to me. I sighed and looked at her, rolling my eyes playfully. I already knew it was about Nikolas and me. Gemma always made thing dramatic, but it was funny.
"Yes." I sang back. Gemma's smile lit up like a Christmas tree in the moonlight. I loved how she grinned, it always made me jealous, it made every girl jealous. I popped a grape into my mouth and chew quietly while I watched her babble on about me and my tiny crush. Her eyes started to twinkle in the light.
"So you and Nikolas." she whispered softly. I scoffed and plopped another grape into my mouth again.
"Not a thing. Nothing between us." I trailed. I won't lie, my eyes flickered towards Nikolas for a second, hoping he wasn't overhearing our slight conversation. I shot my eyes back at Gemma who was talking up again.
"Oh come on. I can see the future and it involves you, him and four kids." she giggled. I hit her playfully and earned some glances from out table.
"You're crazy." I laughed and hung my head, "I wouldn't have four kids." I muttered and Gemma laughed as well. Now everyone was looking at us with complete curiosity and suspicion. I would be too if my two friends won't stop laughing at something unknown to me.
"What's so funny?" Heather giggled, putting her chin in her hands, waiting for a story to be told. I held in my breath and eyed Gemma in the corner of my eye. When Gemma stayed quiet, I spoke up.
"Just girl things." I said casually and all of a sudden, Gemma burst into erupts of laughter and I couldn't help but join. Gemma had one of those laughs that makes you laugh as well. The rest of the group laughed as well after short moments and they didn't even know what the were laughing about.
I saw that we were getting glares from the entire lunch room, including staff people and we didn't even care. These six students showed me how to laugh at the sad and serious moments and it helped a lot after three months of being used to them and their ways.
I loved these guys.
