The Sunset Still Looks Fake To Me

As long as i'm with you

.The sun had almost set. It sent a gloom over the hills and across the dew dropped paddocks. Through the grass, directly in front of me, there crawled a baby hedgehog. And in a pine tree, near the bottom of the small hill me and max were sat at, I could see the silhouettes of the huge oversized turkeys perched high up in the pines thick branches. Everything was serene and quiet. Max, who was sitting next to me, was mellow and he seemed paler in the soft glow of the moon. His dirty-blonde hair was darker as was his brown eyes. He picked awkwardly at the dark green blades of grass. I placed my right hand on top of his to stop him from fidgeting then lay down, looking up at the star studded sky, watching the soft wisps of clouds float by, almost in slow motion. Max lay next to me and asked in a quiet voice,

“If you could be where ever you wanted right now in the whole wide world, where would you want to go?”

I closed my eyes and turned to max “Anywhere but here.”

He looked puzzle for a second “Do you mean anywhere but here as in this spot we’re sitting at right now or……..” his voice trailed off.

“I mean…… anywhere but this farm…. This town…. Any where but here…. What about you?”

He shrugged “Anywhere, as long as I’m with you.”

I looked at Max, then turned away to look at the hills. The sun had finally set, but I could make out just a hint of orange playing on the hill tops.

“I better get going.” I said standing up slowly.

Max looked up at me and gave me a small smile. “I’m gonna stay here a little longer.”

I nodded “well, make sure you go home. Okay?”

He chuckled.

I frowned at him. “I mean it, Max. Go home.”

“I will, I will.”

“Good. I’ll see you tomorrow then.”

“Yeah. See ya tomorrow.”

I made my way slowly down the hill, and then ran home. I was late for dinner, again. And it’s all because Max ‘needed me to stay’ and would ‘be scared out there by himself. What a load of bull crap. He got a kick outta getting me in trouble. With my stern dad he was almost guaranteed I would get yelled at. It reminds me off the time he tied me to a tree in chains and put a padlock on it so I wouldn’t be able to go to town for lunch with my boyfriend, Cameron, who broke up with me ‘coz Max phoned him and said I was busy hanging out with him in his bedroom when, in fact, I was chained to a bloody tree! I forgave Max for it though. I was his only friend, so he was feeling pretty left out, not to mention the jealousy. Plus he has problems. And I mean major problems
