Chapter 11 Not Huge Bookworms
My eyes open and adjust to see the morning rays of light along the ceiling of Josh and my bedroom. I roll over and extend my arm to find that Josh is already gone. I roll onto my back looking up at the ceiling, sighing at the thought that part of my day I will be alone. Another week has gone bye and it is another weekend of solitude. Well not really, I say solitude because again like a broken record Josh is away at work but I think at this point I know longer need to mention it you can just assume that. Later today I have plans to go to a girlfriend’s home for dinner and to catch up with them.
My girlfriends are all around my age, they are in their late twenties and earlier thirties. During the day I pass the time by catching up on the housework, doing laundry, cleaning the bathrooms. As I complete the chores, I think about tonight about seeing my friends. I am looking forward to the visit as the day rolls by and soon enough the evening comes and I find myself standing on a porch under the star filled night sky, knocking on the door. I’m greeted with a warm smile and a hug.
“Jordan, oh I am so happy that you made it!” Hailey gushes and continues, “Well come in, I take it that Josh is working tonight?” Hailey opens the door wide. Her smile is contagious and she looks great, wearing a dark skinny jean, fitted black top with a trendy large blue gemstone pendent necklace that matches her eyes.
“Yes, but this is a girls night isn’t it?” I ask as I walk into her home.
“Yes, Matt is gone with the little one to his parents for the evening to let us girls enjoy our evening.” Matt is her husband and Hailey has a little girl named Brittany.
I follow Hailey down the hallway into her living room and dining room area. She has an open concept home and the room has high ceilings, so high that the space extends to the second level. The windows overlook a beautiful view of the forest. I see that I am the last one here, Lucy, Maggie, Mellissa, and Ophelia are already here and are sitting in the living room area with drinks in hand and I see chips, salsa, and dip on the coffee table in the center.
Ophelia is sitting on the arm of the couch, sees me first and lifts her glass, “Hey Jordan!” Her dark brown hair tied neatly back and she is wearing a black pencil dress.
I walk into the room and say, “Hey Guys!”
Hailey whispers to me, “What would you like to drink?”
“Could I have a juice and carbonated water?” I want to have a fancy drink but with this little one, I need to keep it clean.
She says, “Coming right up.”
Mellissa doesn’t hold back and blurts, “Wow Jordan you are getting so big!” Mellissa is the kind of girl that always just says what is on her mind without putting any thought as to how it will sound or come across. She has red hair that matches that fire type personality. Sometimes she can come off as being a bit of a bitch and well that is because she can be one at times but in this situation, I know that she wasn't being intentionally mean.
I rub my belly and smile, "Yep the little one is growing and I think I can actually see myself get bigger by the day."
Hailey hands me my drink and joins the conversation, chiming in, "When I was pregnant with Brittany I felt the same way. Jordan just don't look at the scale you just got to give your body what it needs and if you want to eat then eat."
"Yah I do, I have been really loving olives lately and just food that I normally wouldn't crave."
Hailey admits, "For me it was watermelon I couldn't get enough and for diner I always wanted a side of fries."
Hailey and I find a seat on the larger part of The L-shaped couch in the room and Mellissa adds, "Wow fries for dinner every night isn't good for you. If I was pregnant I would try to stay away from greasy food all together."
Hailey gives her a look, "Melissa you have no clue. When you are pregnant you crave things and they are intense you will see one day, you may want that but trust me junk food does come into play."
Maggie is the mediator of our group of friends and before the conversation starts to take a turn from light hearted to debate, she steps in, "I think as long as whatever it is you crave is in moderation then its fine to indulge the craving. Eat when you are hungry and stop the moment you are full. Lucy backs Maggie with a nod and a "yes" and everyone follows suit.
The conversation segments from there with a few conversations taking off between the friends; our group of girls have known each other for many years but with life and families and work and such we don’t get to see each other very often like this so there is a whole lot of catching up when we do all meet up.
I soon find myself sharing a conversation with Lucy and Hailey. Lucy is a petit woman with straight long brown hair and a fair complexion. She fills us in on her work life, she explains, “I am still in the same position as I was the last time we talked. It is like this, I like my job, the event planning side of it but some of the drama that goes on I just can’t handle. I know that it doesn’t make sense but I am torn and you know what I do look for other jobs but everything that has come up just hasn’t gotten my interest.”
Lucy works as a civilian member for the department of defense and her office focuses on planning events for military staff and their families. The events range from diners, to fairs for the kids, dances, Halloween and Christmas parties. I know that Lucy loves organizing the events but for the people that she organizes for some of these people have been thru a lot and well sometimes, she has to deal with very difficult situations at these events.
I say, “I get it. I remember you telling me the last time we had talked you had organized a summer dance and at the event, you had to deal with that woman. She was afraid that her husband was going to cause a scene because of some sort of affair that she had with one of the other soldiers and apparently her husband had found out about it.”
Lucy leans in and nods, “Yes, exactly! I know these people are good and that is why I love planning the events because it is a small way of giving back but I am not qualified to deal with some of the heavier situations that arise. I feel that I am helpless at times and I can’t do anything and all I wanted was to plan a great day or evening for them and I get caught having to deal with some type of emotional mess during the event.”
Hailey says, “These are things that are out of your control. I think for event planning, even if you were to switch to like, planning weddings you would still probably run into issues at those kinds of events also. I think any large groups of people there are bound to have a few that are going to cause trouble.”
Lucy says, “Yah I know and maybe that is why I haven’t been looking as hard as I probably should if I really don’t like this. I do love most aspects of my work just not all.”
I say, “Well I think that is true for any job.”
Hailey adds, “Yes, I agree. If the good outweighs the bad then maybe stick it out or see at least if you can find a better solution to deal with those weird situations.”
Lucy agrees, “Yah I just need to maybe think about it and talk with the others that I work with. I can’t be the only one that feels this way.” She shrugs and continues, “Anyway enough about me, Jordan how about you we know that you have been busy making a baby besides that how is work and life?”
I smile and shrug, “Everything is good. Work is pretty well the same. I am still at the same place, there is no gossip, it’s pretty boring but it’s a paycheck so I guess that is good.”
Lucy chuckles, “Yes no gossip means no drama so that’s good in my books. Say I remember the last party you had mentioned that you were writing a novel did anything come up with that?”
Hailey chimes in, “Oh you don’t know, she published it. I actually read it and it’s pretty good.”
I feel my cheeks turn red and I say, “Thanks Hailey, yes I published it last summer and its doing good, I am making a few sales. I am also promoting and have learned a lot when it comes to the business side of things. This entire experience has been eye opening. Not just the writing a book part but learning and actually doing everything else that is involved with becoming an Author.”
Lucy says, “That’s really great, maybe one day you will make it like that new D. Chambers guy?”
I kind of startle at Devon’s name, I never have talked to my girlfriends let alone anyone about me having an affair with him or even boasting that I know him and talk to this famous Author on a regular basis.
Lucy says, “You know who D. Chambers is right; the guy who wrote that new Thriller, Trial that topped the best seller charts.”
Hailey says, “I just finished his book and loved it. I actually just passed it over to Matt to read.”
I sip my drink and answer, “Yah I read his book, and it is really good. I’m hoping one day to make it like him. I just had to think for a second who D. Chambers was. Blame it on my baby brain I guess.” The last thing that they need to know is that I know him. I just don’t want to give anything away and then let something slip that could lead to more questions. I can’t believe it; I am not upset or anything but amazed at the fact that my girlfriends know of Devon and his work. Yes, He is famous I knew that, but for my girlfriends to know of him, this is crazy. I know that some of my girlfriends like to read but they are not huge bookworms so the fact that two of them know of him just speaks volumes to Devon’s growing celebrity status. Anyway, Lucy and Hailey seem to accept the baby brain comment and continue with the conversation.
Hailey says to me, “Jordan you should write a book on your pregnancy.”
I chuckle, “My mom suggested that. I could and I have written a bit but I don’t think it will be something that will catch because there are others who have written about the entire IUI treatment process. My book wouldn’t be an original.”
Hailey says, “Well, just a suggestion. I know that when I was pregnant I purchased so many pregnancy books just to know what to expect. I am sure that there is a market for it.”
“Oh I don’t doubt that there is; well I did start putting words to paper. I’ll see how it goes and flows and decide later if it’s something that I want to publish.”
Lucy says, “There you go!”
Hailey gets up, “I am just going to check on the finger food that is in the oven.” She excuses herself from the conversation and returns moments later with a large tray of hot food for the group to devour.
The rest of the night continues with laughs and more conversation and before I know it, it is late in the night and then I am on route back home. I am driving home along a quiet, dark, straight county road. The blue light on my dashboard lighting up my odometer is a comforting feeling. I don’t know why but I guess it’s just that I like the color. Normally I would be listening to the radio but for now, I enjoy just the sound of the car humming as it carries me home.
It is funny how we can never quite turn our thoughts off and my thoughts are on that conversation that the girls had tonight. I mean it is one thing to read about Devon becoming successful and famous but another thing when you see that the people in your life know who your secret lover is. The silly thing with all of this is if I was drunk at the party. Let’s just say, I know I am pregnant and I would never put the baby at risk all I am saying is if I wasn’t pregnant and hypothetically speaking let’s say that I am drunk. If I was to spill the beans on the affair that I am having and say that I am having it with D. Chambers I think the girls would have thought I was out of my mind and start laughing saying, “Good one!”.
It’s just that with tonight, it’s like my two worlds have sort of just aligned. The thing is I have to continue to be me, Jordan, the girl that has lived in this city, has had the same group of friends and is just a normal woman who is happily married to her loving husband; and who is very likely pregnant with a millionaires baby.
My girlfriends are all around my age, they are in their late twenties and earlier thirties. During the day I pass the time by catching up on the housework, doing laundry, cleaning the bathrooms.
