Don't Forget

“¡No me toques!”

“So it’s like that?” Eric asked, “You’re just going to treat me like he treats you?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Mia fidgeted with the back of her hair.

Mia had asked Eric to meet her at her locker after school. Mia had tried to explain that they may not be spending as much time together now that Connor was back from college on summer break, and this is how he had reacted.

“Yes you do.” Eric’s voice boarded on a shout, “Mia...Goddammit!” He turned to walk away and Mia caught his hand, “¡No me toques!”(1) Eric was so upset he was speaking Spanish, “No Mia. Yo quiero todo; no hay sobras o imitación.”

“Something about an imitation?” Mia offered. Eric realized what was wrong.

“I want all of you or nothing Mia Price, no in between.” Eric translated.

“OK,” Mia said.

“What?” Eric’s eyes were wide. This wasn't the answer he was expecting from her.

Mia laughed a little, “I said OK… I’m tired of this game that I keep losing with Connor.” Mia thought of her last rejection and shivered, “And if you really like me”- Mia didn't get to finish her sentence. He had her pressed against her locker and he was kissing her hungrily. Mia responded hoping to give him what he wanted, but not nearly as experienced. He pulled away and pecked her one last time.

“I hope you know what you’re getting yourself into.”

Mia smiled lacing her fingers behind his neck, “Well if it’s more of that then I’ll gladly accept what ever else comes with it.”

Eric smiled that warm smile, “Oh there’s lot’s more where that came from.”

Down the hall they heard someone clear their throat. Mr. Brown’s bushy eyebrow was high. They separated and held hands. Mr. Brown nodded and went on about whatever it was teachers did after school. Grade papers? Eat babies? Mia walked with Eric to his car in the parking lot. John beeped from his car and Mia waved at him acknowledging his presence.

“So no more Connor?”

“I didn't say that.” Mia said. Eric dropped her hand and leaned against his car, “He’s my friend, Eric.”

“I’m not sharing, Mia.” Eric shook his head, “Not with him…”

“Fine,” Mia said crossing her arms, “Then I guess…” Mia couldn't finish her sentence. It hurt too much.

“Don’t do this Mia…”

“Bye Eric...I’ll see you next year…” Mia turned on her heels and walked to her dad’s car. She was upset to find Connor wasn't the only one who could hurt her this way.
