Don't Forget

“With Connor huh?”

“Stop,” Mia whispered against his lips and he froze.

She took a step away from him and took a deep breath trying to clear her head. Mia was pretty sure stopping that love scene was the hardest thing she’d done in her life. Eric went back to leaning on the railing looking at his shoes.

“Don’t make that face either.” Mia said, “We've been down this road before and it didn't end well.” Mia crossed her arms and sat back on the step again. They were back at square one. No matter how much she wanted to kiss Eric she knew that wasn't the solution.

“I should go.” Eric’s voice was hoarse.

“Why?” Mia asked looking at him. He finally met her eyes.

“Because you don’t want me,”

“Ugh,” Mia said exasperatedly slapping her forehead, “If you really think I don’t want you after everything you should go.” Mia looked forward. The sun had started to set but it was still warm. It was the time of year when the summer heat didn't stop at sundown.

“What do you want me to do?” Eric said, “What am I supposed to say?”

“Apologizing was a good start.” Mia said giving him a small smile, “But we aren't getting back together, and it’s not because you aren't good enough for me so just get that out of your mind right now.” She added the last part when she saw how Eric had reacted. All slouching and frowns, “I’m just not really ready for a boyfriend.” As Mia said it it felt even truer, “I’m just not that type of girl. I could always use a friend though.” She stood and leaned her forehead against his, “Someone who get’s how much of an ass hole Connor is and’ll make fun of his skanks with me.”

Eric met her eyes, “Ok,” Mia smiled and he smiled back. She wrapped her arms around him and they hugged, “So Connor’s just a friend, and I’m just a friend.” He said into her hair.

Mia rolled her eyes in his chest, “Sure. If it helps you to think of it that way.”

“It does,” He said pulling away, “Say hi to B.” He said pointing to the yellow bug across the road. How had she missed that? Beatrice gave a small finger wave. Mia felt her face get hot as she realized she had probably been sitting there watching them the entire time.

“She drove you?”

“She said if she had to listen to one more Coldplay track with me she’d kill herself.”

“Coldplay? Really?” Mia snorted

“That’s right. I was upset.” Eric said smirking, “I should let you get back to whatever you were doing to your hair.” Eric snorted. Mia ran her hand over her head self-consciously before punch Eric in the arm, “Ow so violent.”

“Shut-up and take it!” Mia shouted dramatically, “Are you a man or what?” Maybe she was spending a bit too much time with Beatrice.

“Do you have plans tomorrow?”

“Yes.” Mia said. All laughs and giggles left.

“With Connor huh?”

“Yeah.”

“What about the day after?” Mia looked up at Eric. He’s trying!

“No plans yet.”

“Let’s go to Six Flags.” Eric said, “B’s parents buy season passes every year so all three of us can get in for free. When you finish your hair of course.” Eric stifled his laugh.

“OK.” Mia smiled at him deciding to let his comment pass. For now…
