Don't Forget

“I F*cked Up”

“Are you enjoying yourself?” Mia spat at him. Her dress was balled into her fist as she attempted to descend the grand staircase.

“Yes actually,” Connor said easily keeping up with her.

“Why are you here anyway?” She huffed when they reached the landing, “I told you to stay away.”

“You know how I love my parties.” Connor said stepping closer to her, “Besides it kind of pisses me off I’m not allowed to be seen with you in public. A lesser man would think you’re ashamed.”

“The other woman doesn't get that kind of privilege,” Mia smirked, “I thought you knew.” Connor took Mia by her waist and pushed her into the nearest closet. He pushed her up against the wall pinning her hand above her head. In the darkness he kissed her hungrily smearing her lipstick.

“Connor,” Mia gasped when he pulled away, “We can’t, not at my engagement party.”

“Call off the wedding.” Connor breathed into her neck.

“I can’t,” Mia said.

Connor pulled away and switched on the light.“We can’t keep this up forever, Mia.”

“Why not.” Mia said, “Why can’t I have my cake and eat it too?”

“We both know the answer to that.” Connor said crossing his arms.

“Eric doesn't know anything so I really don’t see a problem.” Mia smirked again, “When did you grow a conscience?”

“I've always had a conscience.” Connor shrugged, “I just don’t listen when it gets in the way of what I want.”

“And it’s not doing that right now?” Mia’s eyebrow perked.

“Not from where I’m standing.”

“Whatever,” Mia said rolling her eyes. She reached for the door and Connor moved in her way.

“How do you think Eric would feel about this?” Shortly, she would regret not considering Connor's question.

“That’s not your problem.” Mia said pushing him out of the way. Mia opened the door to the closet and froze. Eric was standing right outside. When he saw her, his face contorted into a grimace that Mia felt in her chest. No! “Eric?”

“You were right,” Eric said, “Connor may be a lot of things, but he’s not a liar.”

“Thank you,” Connor said smugly behind Mia.

“You set this up?” Mia said hoarsely rounding on him.

“Don’t be mad at him.” Eric said, “Be mad at yourself. I trusted you. I wanted to marry you. I thought you’d finally chose me.” His voice cracked at the last words. Mia felt another pain in her chest. Connor snorted.

“You’re using the past tense.” Mia couldn't get her voice above a whisper. No, please God no.

“That’s because I’m finally done.” Eric said shaking his head, “You can keep the ring.” He turned to walk away.

“No Eric please”- Mia caught his hand and he snatched his hand away and kept walking. Mia turned away she couldn't watch him walk away from her. She looked to Connor. “How could you do this to me?”

“Consider it payback.” Connor shrugged. He wasn't looking at her as he spoke. He was watching Eric leave, “Now you know how it feels to have someone walk out on you without the full story.”

“It’s too much,” Mia said covering her mouth to stifle a sob. She sunk to her knees. She was vaguely aware of Connor walking past her up the stairs back to the party. Eric...She’d hurt him...really bad and now… he was gone. Done with her. She’d ruined everything. She wished she could start over, but how could it have ended any other way?

“Mia?”

Mia looked up to see Beatrice and Rebekah at the staircase. Rebekah's hair had gotten long enough for her to ball into two spiky pony tails on either side of her head. Her ball gown matched the shade of red in her hair as if she was more of in cos-play than at an event. Beatrice had curled her hair and it was pinned to cascade over her left shoulder. Her gown was strapless and a champagne color that seemed to shimmer in the light. They both looked so beautiful.

“Oh my God what happened? I couldn't find Eric and Connor came back and started drinking like he’s in some sort of race.” Beatrice said.

“I fucked up, Honey B.” Mia sobbed, “I really fucked up.”
