Don't Forget

What do we do?

Mia looked up at Connor, “What do we do?”

“You’re asking me?”

“You know her dammit!” Mia said, “I don’t know her. Dad doesn’t know her. Eric certainly doesn’t know her. When you came home with her you never let Aunt Sylvia near her. You’re the only one. You know what to do. So what do we do to feed her?”

“You might not even fully have to wake her up if she’s as hungry as you say she is. Did the nurses teach you how?”

“She tried but Messiah won’t turn to me...She keeps looking for you.” Connor felt his a pain in his chest.

“Ok here you take her, just make sure you put your finger in her hand.” Connor said gently handing Messiah over Mia. Messiah’s eyes fluttered open as Mia’s finger slipped into her hand. Connor heard Mia’s breath catch, “Don’t freak out. She does that creepy staring thing. Just talk to her.”

“What do I say?” Mia whispered.

“Whatever you want. She’s a baby she can’t actually understand you.”

“I know that.” Mia hissed at him. Messiah’s lip poked out.

“Oh and you better be nice to me” Connor snorted pointing at Messiah’s face, “Messiah doesn’t like it when people are rude to me.”

“Oh she won’t understand what I say, but she’ll understand when I’m being rude to you.” Mia rolled her eyes.

“I don’t make the rules.”Connor shrugged, “You’re making it worse.” He read the furrow in Messiah’s brow, “Better say something nice to me or else.”

Mia huffed, “You’d make a wonderful father if you just tried.”

“I don’t think that was something nice.” Connor said.

“It was good enough,” Mia gasped looking down at Messiah. Messiah was cooing her free hand reaching for Mia’s face. Mia kissed her little palm, “I think we should try now.” Mia shifted Messiah down on her arm and pulled out her breast. Connor liked where this was going, “Oh Jeez Connor put your eyes back in your head I’m feeding the baby.”

“Doesn’t make your breast any less sexy.” Connor’s eyebrow perked, “If anything it’s sexier.”

“You’re lucky Messiah likes you.” Mia moved Messiah’s blanket to cover the baby’s head and her shoulder. She looked more like she decided baby blanket shawls were in than feeding an infant. Mia peaked under the blanket readjusting, “She’s doing it! She’s feeding.”

“I’m not lucky…” Connor said. His tone made Mia look to him, “I saw the worst of it. She had tubes and wires coming from everywhere. She’s even bigger from the last time I saw her. She was so small when I first visited her. I had to leave her crying in a room of strangers three too many times. I’m not lucky...I’m cursed.” Connor smirked, “You know, babies will be babies no matter what, but you can’t be a parent without a baby.”

“Connor...why did you leave me?” Mia said

“I said already.” Connor said, “And I didn’t want to end up your fuckin’ nanny. I wanted you remember? Wonder Boy was supposed to take Stinky...He beat me to the punch again…”

“Don’t”-

“Messiah likes my nicknames,” Connor said, “She listened to all of my stories with all of nicknames and she loved it.”

“She’s a baby.” Mia rolled her eyes.

“So it’s illogical for her to like my stories, but it’s logical for her to hate you for driving me away.”

Mia shrugged, “I don’t make the rules.” How did she do that? Always find a way to use his words against him.
