Ineffable Plan

Two

Five months later I was all packed and ready to go to the airport. My parents had still refused to acknowledge that I was going to school in Washington and not in Massachusetts; that I would be studying art and not psychology; that I was going to Evergreen and not Harvard. They had indeed kept their word to not support (financially or otherwise) my decision. It was a very good thing that I had always worked during the summer and held after school jobs. If not, I couldn't have afforded my airplane ticket to Washington.

My brother was driving me to the airport. He was the only one, other than my five year old brother, who seemed to be accepting my choice. I had always liked him best anyway. After checking that I had all my stuff, I walked into the kitchen to say goodbye to my parents. My mother pretended she didn't understand a word I said. She kept responding inappropriately. When I told her I was leaving and hugged her goodbye, she said that she would see me later and to be home by ten. I scrunched my eyebrows together and managed to notice my father roll his eyes at her behavior. So I moved on to him. He was a lot more responsive than I expected. He gave me a tight hug and wished me good luck and a safe flight.

I was on the lawn and half way to Dustin's car when I heard a small voice screaming my name. I quickly turned around and smiled when I saw my little brother running towards me.

"Hey, Mikey," I said ruffling his hair.

"Dad said to give this to you."

He handed me a small white envelope and on the front was written 'Snowpea'. That was my dad's nickname for me. He hadn’t used it in years. I smiled down at the envelope and placed it in the tote bag I was carrying on the plane with me. I looked up and saw him standing at the kitchen window. He gave me a small smile and I returned it. I gave Mikey a final hug and got into the car.

"Are you ready to go?" Dustin turned and asked me.

I nodded and we took off. I glanced into the rearview mirror and notice Mikey still standing on the front lawn. He was staring intensely at the car. I was going to miss him. A single tear fell down my cheek.

There would have been a lot more tears if I had only known that would be the last time I saw him.
