Ineffable Plan

Thirty-Six

"Would you like to know why you're here Justine Wallace."

Slowly her head bobbed up so she could look him hatefully in the eyes. "That would be nice." She drawled lazily.

The monster chuckled. "My dear, you, by yourself, would be of no importance to me. You would be an insignificant speck on the pages of history. Without that boy of yours, Aaron, you wouldn't have registered on anyone's radar, but the moment your path crossed with his, you were done for. Blame him for your untimely death, not me. He knew, Justine. He knew that in pursing you he was also sentencing you to your death. Would you like to know why that is?"

"I would like it if you'd get to the point. This little monologue of yours is making me nauseous." Justine answered; her voice thick and foreign. She felt tired and could barely keep her body upright.

"You're mistaken. The poison seeping through those vines and into your veins, that's what's making you nauseous. At the end of 'my little monologue,' if that's what you would like to call it, you'll have a very important decision to make. Either you die here and Aaron lives or you join us and Aaron lives. I'm sure you've noticed that in both choices Aaron lives. It's you that is in peril. So of course you can see the logical choice?"

"Of course." Justine concurred. As she did so she felt the vines loosen around her wrist just a little.

The monster smiled. "You're doing much better than I thought you would. Compliancy is best. You will be happy here. So about the pro-"

"Now you're mistaken. I believe we've got a difference in opinion of what is the 'logical choice.' I die here."

A low rumble escaped his chest and the vines retightened around Justine's wrists. "Maybe you'll change your mind once you hear of the prophecy; of what wheels he put in motion; what he was willing to risk.” He paused for a moment before continuing. "We used to rule this world. Did you know that? The Coven was in charge. We ruled from this very castle. For centuries we controlled everything that went on in this realm. Warlocks were the highest species and everyone else was made to bow at our feet. But all that changed a century ago, way before you or that boy were even a thought in your parents’ minds. A prophecy was told that a vampire would be born who would gain the strength to end our reign. Five years later that vampire was born. He was the grandfather of your Aaron. The prophecy came true and a little after his twenty-second birthday he had indeed defeated us and sent the Coven and the castle we reside to the underground realm. When his wife gave birth to his first son another prophecy was told. He would begin the genocide of the Coven and die in his efforts." A smile crept onto the monsters face. "The prophecy came true and he managed to nearly annihilate the Coven, all but us seven, but in the end he was killed."

"We thought that his vile bloodline ended with him, but we were wrong. There was another son, his brother, your Aaron's father. He was younger by nearly ten years. We watched carefully as he grew. The Seers, of both present and future, kept an eye on him, but nothing turned up. He found his perfect match, Aphelia, and they got married. Four sons were born, all without prophesies and we assumed we were safe. It had always been the first son. Then Aaron was born and the Seers went blind. Four months of darkness and silence. They couldn't see anyone, no prophecies were made. It was as if our realm was frozen, no event worthy of seeing was happening. It was strange but not something to worry about. Then you were born." The monster inhaled deeply and grimaced. "The Seers saw that. The Seers of the present."

"Their world was illuminated again and they were grateful. You had brought back the light. You ended the unfamiliar silence. That was why they protected you; why they wouldn't reveal your identity. They said they didn't know, but of course they did. They turned on us! They turned their backs on their brothers! They didn’t care that the Seers of the future were still left in the darkness. Did it matter to them that they knew not of what significance your life held? No! Did they care of what ramifications your birth was bound to cause? No! They had gotten their sight back and they sought to protect the one who they thought had brought the light."

"What's all this got to do with Aaron and me?" Justine slurred angrily. "So what if they got their sight back? Get to the point please."

"I wouldn't expect such insolence from a girl in your position."

"Why not? I've got no expectation of living through this. There's nothing to lose."

"And yet another reason why you should have remained insignificant, brat! But this is all a Digression…" He mused. "Like I said, Aaron's birth brought darkness to all Seers, present and future alike, but your birth brought light to the Seers of the present only. It wasn't until a few years ago, I believe it was two years in your realm, that the Seers of the future regained their sight. What they saw was…unpleasant to say the least. You and the boy met and-"

"Aaron and I didn’t meet until a few months ago."

"Silence! Useless interruptions are all I get from you when I am trying to save your miserable life! Can't you see that! When you and the boy first met, you were sixteen. You may not remember it, but he has."
