Ineffable Plan

Seven

Little did I know that with every step I took, I was losing bits of my memory of that night. By the time I got to the suite, I couldn’t remember how I got there. The next morning I had no recollection of the entire night. The last thing I remembered was leaving the suite for the party.

I rolled out of bed and slowly marched through the living room and into the bathroom. When I got out, I saw Phin in the kitchen making a pot of coffee.

“Morning, Phin.”

“Next time you’re going to take off in the middle of a party, do you think you can let someone know?” He answered stiffly.

“I’m sorry. I have no idea what happened last night. I have no idea how I got back here. The entire night is just one big blur.”

“Drank that much, huh?” He turned to face me. He had a small smile on his face.

“I guess,” I poured myself some coffee and stood next to him, leaning against the counter.

“So how was the rest your night?” I asked him.

“The rest of my night just left.”

“Name?”

“Samantha. I think,” he answered looking up from his coffee cup at me.

“Gross.”

“Mary’s night, on the other hand, took a nose dive after you left. She freaked out and spent the rest of the night searching for you. She was going nuts about ‘what you could be doing’.”

I looked up at Phin and gave him a doubtful look. He smiled slyly at me and took a long slow sip of his coffee before he continued.

“At first we thought she was worried about you, but she made it very clear that that wasn’t the case.” He stopped again and took another sip of coffee.

“Phineas, will you please stop doing that? It’s very annoying,” I stated.

“She seems to think that you’re very dangerous.” He smiled and was about to continue when Mary walked out of her room. She was on her way to the bathroom and was halfway past Phin and I when she notice that we were there.

“You!” She yelled and pointing accusingly at me. “Where the hell did you go last night?”

I smiled smugly and didn’t answer.

“Where were you?” She had moved so that she was standing right in front of me. I gave her that toothy smiled she seemed to hate so much. Like always, she flinched and retreated a few steps back.

“Phineas, let’s finish this conversation in my room. Come on.”

I grabbed two muffins from the kitchen counter (one for me and one for Phin) and dragged him into my room. Once we were inside I locked the door and plopped onto my bed. Phin did the same. I handed him a muffin and scurried under the blankets.

“You’re not supposed to eat in bed,” he said passively.

“I’m cold.”

I held the blankets open, inviting him to join me and he happily did.

“No touching the goodies,” he warned.

I rolled my eyes and tried to get back to what we were discussing.

“So, you were saying…”

He looked at me for a second and then realization dawned on his face.

“Mary. Right.”

“Yes, Mary,” I said impatiently.

“She thinks you’re dangerous.”

“You already said that.”

“She thinks you’re not human.”

I rolled my eyes at the thought. That must be why she calls me ‘it’.

“She thinks you’re a…”

“Phin!”

“Vampire!!! Muahaha,” Phin broke into a fit of evil laughter and I couldn’t help but laugh. He was such a child.

“Seriously, Phin. What’s her problem?”

“I’m not kidding, Jus. She thinks you’re a bloodsucking, sun fearing, living dead, stake through the heart vampire.”

“You can’t be serious. She can’t really believe that.”

“Oh, but she does. That’s what she meant by the parties not being safe if you were going. You were the threat, my love.” Phin patted my head condescendingly.

Before I could answer there was a knock on the door.

“Who is it?” Phin yelled.

“What are you doing in there, Phin?” I heard Amber say.

I climbed out of bed and unlocked the door to let her in. Once she was inside I relocked the door and climbed back into bed and moved closer to Phin.

“Care to join, Amber?” I said wriggling my eyebrows suggestively.

She nodded and climbed under the covers.

“I’m guessing he told you about Mary.”

I nodded.

“Can you believe that? The girl has gone completely off her rocker. You should have seen her last night. She was raving on and on about how she needed to find you before you could hurt or kill someone. It was pretty insane.”

*Knock, knock.*

“Who is it?” Amber, Phin, and I yelled out simultaneous.

“Me!” Chris and James yelled back.

Amber slid out of the bed to let them in.

“Why is everyone in here?” James asked. “And why are you two in bed?”

“Amber was in here, too. We had a little morning ménage à trios,” Phin answered quickly.

“We were discussing the vampire problem,” Amber said pointing at me.

At that Chris and James burst into laughter. “Oh, yeah. What are we going to do with her? We couldn’t possibly live with a vampire,” Chris said.

“Funny,” I said dryly.

The five of us spent the next hour crowded in my small room. The conversation quickly moved away from Mary and vampires and I was grateful. Everyone simply thought that Mary had gone a little strange. No one thought that I was strange and once again I was grateful.

That night as I tried to fall asleep I was bothered by this nagging feeling that there was something I should remember. I really shouldn’t have drunk so much last night.
