The Gaiety Theater

Stave 1

Meara Milani got onstage.
Alexander got ready with his bass guitar, and Kurt got ready on the drums.
Merara had always been told she couldn't sing, but now? Well, she could prove her vocal prowess, but only to Danny and Esme, who were sitting at the tables.
Meara loved The Gaiety Theater. Cabaret seating, a black curtain with silver stars embroidered on it.
Gaiety. Not homosexual, even though many kids her age thought of it the actual word "gay" like that. Gaiety as in..happy. The Happy Theater.
She wasn't happy. Esme wasn't happy. Danny wasn't happy. Alexander and Kurt...well, they were dead, so they didn't have any problems. But she couldn't think anymore. She started to sing.

You may say that I can't do this
I can't say I'll prove you wrong
This isn't a HallMark sponsored movie
This isn't even a very good song

I may say that you're wrong
I might believe that you're right
If I say that you're wrong
I better get out of your sight

Well, you couldn't guess what I do
You don't know the first thing about me
Come on down to The Gaiety
And then you will see...

We dance for no one, perform for no man
We're people who don't even have a plan
Can't say that we're happy
Can't say we're content
But here at this theater, which seems heaven sent
You find yourself in a place with no judge
You sing for people who say that you can't sing
Tell us to move, but we won't budge
And with you, our song will ring

Esme got up now, and Kurt and Alexander kept the music coming. Stephen joined in, too.
Esme sang

To say that we are only sad
Would also be a mistake
We have so much to give to you
Even if you can only take

So come on down,
We'll sing you a tune
Maybe then you will see
It isn't just gloom.....

Danny didn't want to sing tonight. That was okay. Danny had his good days and his bad days. The audience that wasn't there roared in approval, and Meara and Esme bowe.
A successful opening night.
