Mixed Reactions to Rikers Island Football
(June 5th, 2005) After learning of the NCAA’s approval of the Rikers Island football program, many people are experiencing mixed reactions. Some feel overjoyed that the inmates of Rikers Island will be able to channel their energy in an effective manner and have some fun despite their gloomy situations. However, most feel as though the program will be a tremendous waste of tax payer money.
A multitude of riots have broken out in the streets of New York. The city already has a high tax rate, and now they will be called upon to fund a football dome with costly security equipment. Multiple arrests have been made as the violence has escalated. One man set fire to his Geo Metro hatchback. The car was extinguished safely, and after a long foot chase, the man was apprehended.
The irony of the situation is that the man who set fire to his car will likely end up at Rikers Island for an extended amount of time….
