Rikers Island Jail Football Program

Funding Cut for “The Jailhouse”, Rikers Football Program Cancelled

(September 12th, 2006) It is a gloomy day around the Rikers Island Jail Complex. Inmates learned hours ago that the Rikers Island football program will no longer be funded so the program has been cancelled.

Inmates have rioted, and faught all afternoon. Multiple inmates have been tazed, mased, pepper sprayed, and thrown in solitary confinement. One inmate knocked out a guard out of frustration. She will likely receive many more years onto her sentence.

In wake of all of the damage done by vandals and arsonists, the city of New York no longer feels as though the expenses of building “The Jailhouse” are feasible. Therefore, the football program is effectively terminated.

There aren’t many things that can make jail any more gloomy, but today, the state of New York found a way to.
