Humanity is not alone in the vast stretches of space; they are, if anything, just one of millions of species inhabiting the cosmos. Humans are savages, socially backwards and hopelessly technologically deficient.
The Ryrkin, conversely, are seen by most other species as one of the most advanced societies and their influence stretches far and wide.
When Ryrkin soldier Ven Evodus vo Sol disgraces himself, he is sentenced to exile on the most isolated planet, one that Ryrkins visited millennia ago but abandoned to the edge of their sphere of influence: Earth.
Ven blends into human society well enough for five years, but one mistake costs him his relative freedom. He is sentenced to live peacefully with a human family for six months, and if he fails, his life is forfeit.
It should be easy for him, considering he managed for five years prior to this, but, of course, nothing is ever easy.
