Illusion

People will believe a lie because they want it to be true;
or they’re afraid it’s true. - Terry Goodkind, Wizard's First Rule

Darcy Barlow liked going to the park as a child. She liked it so much she continued the tradition long after her father passed away. She sat on the bench across from the bird lady, Rebecca ‘Becky’ Owens, every Sunday, waiting for the woman’s prince charming to show up.

He never did.

Some people said the woman was crazy; there was no prince coming for her. But she waited every week on her bench.

Once, on a dark foggy Sunday evening, someone showed up.

That was the night Becky Owens got stabbed forty seven times after her throat was slit. Darcy only saw the old woman falling into a man’s arms. Into her prince’s embrace, Becky fell, and Darcy left seeming lovers to Becky’s demise.

Now, Prince Charming might just be chasing a new victim.

Things may not always seem as they appear.
