April Agony

The Incident

“It happened in early January of 2014. She hadn't been feeling very good, so she took some medicine and went to take a nap. I took the time to go take care of some things.

“The fire started from a stray spark from the fire place making it to the carpet. The majority of the house was in flames within a quarter of an hour. April was still asleep. Had she not taken the medicine, she probably would have woken up...

“I learned on my way back, because a neighbour called to tell me. Neither of us knew about her at the time.

“By the time I got back, the fire had been mostly put out. And they were going through the home. I was looking around for April when a fireman yelled for the EMTs. My heart sank. I knew.

“Her funeral was the following weekend. She had always spoke of being cremated after death. But it felt gruesome and cruel based off how she died. It was quiet, uncomfortable and painful; as if it was still sinking in.

“We all just had a hard time saying goodbye.”
