Festivus for the Rest of Us
Festivus For The Rest of Us
Normally when Kaner hit up a bar, the last girl he would be attracted to would be the girl sitting at a table by herself, a glass of water in front of her. Especially when there was a huge group of hot blondes dancing in a circle in front of her. But for this night, he couldn't take his eyes off of her.
Of course, he danced with other girls, nearly made out with one until he noticed her holding her iPhone ready to take a picture. It was worth having that girl curse him out in English and Dutch if it meant no more crazy pictures online. The girl definitely danced with her friends and danced with a couple of guys but... she just wasn't drinking.
"Go and talk to her, she's supposedly with this group of sorority girls," Crawfie slurred. Kaner perked up and smiled. Sorority girls were easy, this would be a piece of cake.
Jingle Bell Rock was playing and a bunch of people were dancing to the tune on the dance floor. She was now sitting on back at the table, furiously typing on her phone. Kaner sat down and cleared his throat but she still didn't notice him. He said, "Excuse me," and she looked up. Kaner nearly gulped as he stared into a pair of golden hazel eyes. Then she winked. "My eyes tend to have that effect on people."
Kaner chuckled; the girl was a bit of a jokester. Looking for an easy conversation starter, Kaner casually asked, "So, why aren't you dancing with your friends?"
"This isn't my kind of music," She demurred with a slight laugh.
Kaner raised an eyebrow. "Everyone loves Jingle Bell Rock! It's the best Christmas song!"
"I'm not really into Christmas music," she replied.
"Because of how they overplay it," Kaner asked.
She smiled at him before sweetly replying, "I'm Muslim."
Kaner looked at her sideways. "Why are you in a bar?"
She shrugged. "I'm the designated driver."
Kaner leaned in, his attention now taken by her shirt. "Delta-"
"Hey," she yelled. "Don't announce that."
"What, I'm just reading your shirt," Kaner protested.
She looked at him and rolled her eyes. "You're so blitzed that you're yelling everything."
"Sorry," Kaner apologized. "But yeah, your shirt?"
She rolled her eyes again before explaining, "I'm in a sorority and we had a mixer before this."
"Something Christmas related," Kaner stated and she nodded. "This is overkill?"
"Very," she agreed.
Kaner leaned back in his chair, thinking. Then he leaned forward again and put his elbows on the table. "Do you celebrate anything at this time of the year?"
She gave him a thoughtful look before replying, "There is one holiday that I do like...."
"And what is it," Kaner eagerly interrupted her.
She shot him an annoyed look before continuing, "I like Festivus."
"Why," Kaner asked. "It's that holiday with the pole, right?"
"Yup, and it has a tradition of airing of grievances," she added.
Kaner smirked. "That sounds cool."
She smiled at him, showing off pearly whites. "Since we have a pole right here next to me, I'm going to air some grievances. I really don't like how you've been staring at my boobs all night. There is a bimbo over there who's been trying to get your attention, you should talk to her." Then she got her drink and stood up.
"But hey-," Kaner started before she added, "Oh, and tell your BFF Toews he needs to score more goals for my fantasy team."
Kaner could only shake her head as she left him and joined her friends over at the pool game on the other side of the bar. Next time, he was going to hit on the girl who liked Christmas.
