My Soul to Keep

Phone Call

Small talk enclosed the group, however Terra couldn't help but zone out. Mrs. Peyton's only topic worth discussing was shopping in foreign lands and going to operas. Terra's eyes wandered over to Matt, she admired the way he put his all into whatever conversation was happening. He really wanted to close this deal out with Mr. Peyton on his side.

“He sure is something to behold.” Terra almost didn't notice Mrs. Peyton's voice.

“Um, Matt?”

“Of course. I couldn't help but notice how you were gazing at him. He must be some sort of romantic.” She took a sip from her wine glass and then sighed to herself. “I remember when I used to look at Gregory that way. He used to be so passionate at home, now it's a battle to even get him in bed.”

“Oh...I'm sorry.”

“All I'm saying is,” She nodded toward Matt and Mr. Peyton. “take advantage of all the love you two have between you right now. Cherish these moments, because there will come a horny, blonde, skimpy bimbo with nothing better to do...and he'll forget what marriage is.”

“No, Mrs. Peyton. Matthew's different.”

“I said the same about Gregory. Maybe you're right and I'm just some old foul, but please don't stop listening to your gut honey. Worst mistake I ever made.”

Matt suddenly looked toward the two, catching Terra looking at him he smiled warmly. Things were going great for him, he was happy about the way his deal was closing out.

“I'll just fax you the paper work tomorrow Mr. Peyton, let's not get the pens out after such a wonderful evening.”

“That's something else I admire about you Matthew, you don't rush into things.”

“I've never felt a need to rush.”

“Perhaps you should.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well Matthew, how long are you planning on being engaged to such a beautiful creature?”

“We're actually planning on marring by the end of the month. We haven't told anyone yet though, it's her family.”

“Oh that I understand. Listen if you need anything else, call me at my home. I've got another business meeting tomorrow morning and I think it's time I get the Mrs. home.”

“Sure thing, as I said, I'll fax over all the paperwork that will require your signature tomorrow.”

“I'll be looking for it. Come on Jennifer, let's let the kids enjoy their evening.”

They all stood, Matt and Terra saying their goodbyes to the couple before sitting back down.

“That went well. I've got him sorted out and we'll be taking his account tomorrow.”

“Matt, you didn't answer my question.”

With a sigh he nodded and turned to face Terra. “I don't have an answer for that Terra. I guess I just wanted to be in the role for the Peytons. If it made you uncomfortable-”

“I was just thinking about your fiancee, she wouldn't be happy if she-”

“She's never happy. Listen, I-” The sound of Matt's vibrating cellphone stopped him. He fished around for it in his coat pocket, then answered it quickly. “Hey, I told you-...slow down, what's happening?”

“Is something wrong?” Terra asked as she watched his face set into confusion.

“No, no I'll be right there! Brian I'm on my way!” He hung up and scrambled to his feet. He produced his credit card from his pocket and then grabbed Terra's hand. “We've got to go. There's an emergency with my family, I'll pay and then drop you off at home.”

“Sure, no problem.”
