Chapter 17

Carly was sleeping by the time I got home, curled up on the couch with a blanket and a book in her lap. I didn't have the heart to wake her just to devastate her with the truth. So I let her rest. Because I knew once she woke up, I wouldn't be able to keep this secret from her anymore.

So in the meantime, before I ruined her life, I made coffee.

“You didn't come home last night.”

Carly slid her arms around my waist and rested her cheek on my shoulder. It took everything I had not to flinch. She shouldn't be touching me. Not after what I'd put her through. What I was about to put her through when I spoke.

“I was exhausted, so I just stayed at the office,” I said.

Partial truth never hurt anyone; but the whole truth did, once it was revealed.
