Chapter 26

“Oh, Veronica,” he said sadly. “What are you doing?”

I took a step closer, then another, and another until I was standing in from of him. My hands were shaking so much that the knife trembled, and I was afraid I was going to drop it. But I couldn't. Not before—

“You're sending me away,” I said, my voice rising. “I won't let you do that. Not after all we've been through.”

“Veronica, you're not well,” he replied. “You need help—more than I can ever give you. You have to find a new doctor.”

That made me laugh. “I know you're scared,” I said, reaching out to touch his cheek. He flinched. “Elias, please.”

I said please the way I had said it those times in his office. Before he fucked me. Before he kissed me.

Before was better.

Before was not now. Now was after, and after was awful. After was rejection. And I couldn't be rejected—not again.

Tears filled my eyes, but my hands stopped shaking.

“I'm sorry,” I whispered. “I can't let you go.”

It was quick. The knife going in. It slid in so easily. Blood sprayed on my face and clothes, then his body dropped.

Killing Elias had been easier than I thought.
