Chapter 29

Hospital security had come and detained Veronica. I watched as they escorted her out, and she never even made a sound—just looked at me with a terrible expression and hurt in her eyes. Then, after they'd gone, Janna stood beside me, and took my hand.

“It's over,” she said.

“Did you see the way she looked at me?”

“She deserved worse than that,” Carly said, standing on my other side. Her eyes filled with tears, and her voice shook. “I should have called the police all those years ago. I'm so sorry, Eli. This is all my fault.”

“It's not your fault,” I said, wincing as I struggled to sit up. “I treated her, I crossed a line—twice—and I shouldn't have.”

“You didn't know she would turn out this way,” Janna said. “It's better that the police deal with her.”

I wanted to tell them I knew this wasn't over.

I knew she would be back.

I just didn't know what would happen when she returned.
