I watched the car pull into the parking lot. I knew it was him before he even got out. He looked better since I'd seen him last, but his eyes were cold as he stared at me. He crouched down when he got closer.
“I figured I'd find you here,” he said.
I smiled. “I'm glad to see you're doing better.”
“Veronica.” That tone, again, like he was disappointed.
“Dr. Carter,” I replied. “What is it that you're doing here?”
Elias leaned back, shutting his eyes. “Looking for you. I want to talk to you about what happened. What you're going through. We need to find a way to fix this.”
He wanted to fix this? I knew what he meant.
“You want to fix me,” I said.
“I want you to see that this version of who you are is not good. You are completely unstable. You need help.”
“You keep saying that,” I told him. “But you're still seeking me out. Admit it: You like this version of me—you like the danger.”
“You tried to kill me,” he snarled. Then he stood. “We're done here. You are going to leave town and you're not going to come back.”
I just smiled.
"Whatever you say, doctor."
