Chapter 41

I watched her swayed as the blood dripped down her temple. She had been too busy to see what was right in front of her: Janna had the ashtray hidden, and I'd felt it behind her. So I had just been waiting, distracting Veronica until I could use it.

She stared up at me, her blue eyes full of shock and betrayal. Her lips, the ones I'd kissed when I shouldn't have, parted as if she were going to say something. She would probably have asked me why. Maybe she was going to tell me to go to hell.

Maybe I deserved that. But she deserved worse.

My head ached.

Haze wrapped around me as I stared at the woman at my feet, and the skin peeling back from the wound on her temple; blood pooled beneath her. She'd been reaching for the gun, her fingers inches from it.

My face itched from where she'd cut me with her nails.

But she was dead.

Sirens wailed in this distance. As I walked outside to meet the police—and my fate—all I could think of was:

I didn't have a choice.
