Chapter Seventeen
My Vow
Lazarus
“Don’t panic. This is probably just where the bitch took her to hold her captive or”.
Ashe trailed off knowing damn well what I did. Grave yards were places of sacrifice. This woman whoever she was had something big planned for Karissa’s execution and I couldn’t let it happen. I ran blinding through the grave yard screaming her name. My voice echoing back at me.
Ashe grabbed onto my arm holding me back.
“Listen!”
He said looking around the grave yard. Ember, Skyler, Eldritch and Fallon remained silent behind me as the sound of someone talking sounded like it was coming from the ground. It was muttered and faint. None of us could be sure this was real and then it shot through me. Pure agony as someone or something screamed from under our feet.
The scream and the pain projected from it shot through me bringing me to my knees. Tears building in my eyes. The energy coming from the projection was hers. It was her pain, every ounce of pain she’s been made to feel this past sixteen years. Pain she didn’t deserve.
“There!”
Fallon called out turning towards a tomb that looked like it had been disturbed. I fought against the pain and bolted moving fast with the aid of my wings the others falling back behind me. I didn’t hold anything back as I busted through the door at the bottom of the stairs slamming the woman face first into the hard stone wall. I cracked her skull knocking her out cold and breaking her nose.
I drew my sword ready to plunge it into her body. It was now or never.
“Hold on!”
Ashe called out to me but I ignored him plunging the sword down at her and then I heard her.
“Lazarus?”
Trembling I looked towards Karissa as she hung there. Her feet not touching the ground, her body slumped forwards, she could barely lift her head at all. She looked like she had been through hell. She was all that mattered. I slashed out slicing the iron cuffs in two with the strength of my will powering the sword. I caught her in my arms dropping down with her as I cradled her in my arms.
“Risa, Risa”.
I whispered through my tears pushing her hair from her face, tears rolling down my cheeks as I looked down on her. All that pain, how did she live with all that pain bottled up inside her?
“We need to get her back to a Sanctuary now”.
Ash advised, I knew he was right. Eldritch narrowed his eyes at the woman who had been torturing her.
“What about the agent?”
Ashe turned to him.
“We’ll deal with her later, Karissa is priority”.
I stood carrying Karissa from the tomb the others following behind me in silence. We crossed through the portal again and made our way back to the car. I let Ashe do the driving now. Skyler sat up front with him while Ember sat on Eldritch lap and I held Karissa in my arms. Fallon sitting between us looking worriedly at Karissa. Somehow I knew this was all my fault, I had failed her and caused her a great deal of pain.
It was a long drive but we managed to make it to the LA Sanctuary. The Mentor here was Lord Rodrick, we knew him through some training he had given us when he worked for Seraphim. He advanced and was given his own Sanctuary to start up. I sat at Risa’s side as the medic looked her over he clicked his tongue shaking his head lightly.
“Tough girl, she’s been through a lot and she’s still breathing”.
He said as he made some notes on the clipboard.
“You have no idea”.
I muttered, I had no idea. The pain I felt her projection from the deepest parts of her soul was something I would never ever forget. And I would make it my life’s mission to make sure she never felt that way again. Not ever.
