Edge of Our Dreams

The Rock Star

“Hey Sarah have you go-“ Lilly paused walking into the room and realising she wasn’t actually speaking to anyone. Okay that was not completely true, someone was listening but he…yes he…wasn’t quite who she had been expecting. “Hi?”

“Hi?”

“Hey,”

“Hey,”

“Okay so umm next sentence,” Lilly laughed awkwardly as the guy did the same, she was sure she recognised him. “You must be Adam? Or a burglar doing a really bad job?”

“Adam, though I have been eyeing up you CD collection,” Lilly laughed noting how smart Adam looked and smelt quite nice; clearly he was here for a reason.

“Thought so we’ve met a few times right?”

“Alcohol has always been involved,” Lilly smiled, he was honest and funny, she liked his personality. “You were looking for Sarah?”

“Yeah where is that crazy kid?”

“In her room grabbing a jacket, she umm, we are going out,”

“Ooo out?” Lilly raised her eyebrows. “Have her home by 11!” She smirked and Adam chuckled; at least he got her sense of humour.

“You up to much?” He asked and then seemed to realise what he had asked and stumble over his next sentence. “I mean it is only a Wednesday night who would be!”

“No nothing much,” Lilly replied still keeping up her smile, poor guy, he must know she was a heartbroken singleton. “So where are you taking her?” She turned the subject back to him just as Sarah popped her head through the door.

“Hey hey!” She waved brightly. “How do I look?” She walked in twirling around as she entered the room and giggled.

“Hey nice dress!” Lilly smiled brightly at her both girls turning to Adam who had to regain some composure. Oh yeah Sarah had caught this one good. Lilly smiled at him and couldn’t help but chuckle.

“You look beautiful,” Adam said sincerely putting his hands out to take Sarah’s. He lent in and kissed her squarely on the lips pulling her closer to him. Lilly had to smile; even if inside all she could think about was the last time Tom had kissed her like that.

“Right you crazy kids,” It sounded awkward as she said it and she cringed inside. “Have a wonderful time I’ve got a tv show with my name on it!” Way to sound like a loser.

“No watching Buffy without me,” Sarah warned earning an eye roll from Lilly. “I am deadly serious Lilly!”

“Go and enjoy yourself,” She lent in and hugged her friend, she hoped she was close enough that Adam couldn’t hear. “And enjoy him!” Lilly waved to them from the door before they stepped into a taxi and were whisked away into the evening sun.

Sarah lent back in the taxi, a big smile on her face, her hand resting on the seat next to her. Adam placed his hand on top of hers just watching her lean back on the chair. Her hair glistened in the sunlight the red was beautiful when it caught the light.

“So where are we going?” Sarah questioned smiling back at Adam who was watching her.

“Well first of all to the gig,”

“Ah the secret gig!” She laughed. “And then to the restaurant, I’ve gone upper class for the restaurant encase the gig is a fail and I lose my chance completely,” He smirked. Sarah couldn’t help but laugh at his response, she enjoyed being around this guy he was relaxed, funny and mixed well with her quirky nature.

They chatted a bit more about music, Adam had a great knowledge and was pretty sure Sarah would enjoy the band they were going to see. A little heavy, rocky, with a mix of punk; she was excited it sounded like it could be fun. Adam chatted animatedly about bands they both liked, and although their movies tastes with polar opposites, it seemed they had a lot of music tastes in common. Sarah had always advocated that differences were really important, she felt personally that two people exactly the same would be boring. It was fun to share your favourites things, introduce people to new music, or film, or watch them try your favourite meal, drink or visit your favourite shop with you. Variety was of course the spice of life.

The other thing that could add spice to your life was discovering the guy you dating was the lead singer of a band.

“So, I would stay with you but it would be a bit difficult, I’d love to have you backstage but you can stay out front if you want!”

“Are you fucking serious?” Sarah starred at him in amazement the shit eating grin over his face fading slightly. “This is the most awesome thing, umm backstage would be cool!”

“Come on then,” He linked his hand with hers and lead them to the front of the queue flashing a badge at the guys they pair were ushered in. Sarah couldn’t help but laugh as she walked next to him watching people set up. It turned out Adam had been to the venue before picking Sarah up, he planned ahead, and was back in time to go on stage with his band. He lead Sarah backstage to a dressing room area that was shared by everyone. Packed with people Sarah for the first time felt a bit lost as he said hello to everyone and introduced her. Although remembering the names of all those people was near impossible so you took to smiling politely shaking hands or accepting hugs, whatever worked.

The night featured three bands, Adam’s second, each band was similar in terms of rocky with a little punk; not too heavy but not some pop band either. One band was dressed as 80s hair metal stars, think big hair, leopard print leggings, cowboy boats, and sleeveless tops that showed off an array of tattoos; Sarah picked them as the most fun. The final band were rockier than punk, all dressed in ripped jeans and skinny tops. While finally Adam’s band, Sarah may have been a little biased, but she liked them the most. His voice captured her thoughts completely, and she was sure she wouldn’t forget this night in a hurry.

“So what did you think?” Were the first words he uttered coming off stages and walking straight up to her. She hugged him tightly, two weeks together, and she didn’t care how awkward this was for him, she just had to hug him.

“You were incredible and-“ She paused peeling herself away. “A little bit gross,”

“Sorry sweat happens under those lights,” He chuckled pressing a kiss against her forehead. “Stay
watch the other band while I get changed, then we are out of here,”

“Don’t you want to hang with your band?”

“Not tonight,” He lent in and pressed a chaste kiss against her lips. “Tonight, I celebrate with you, give me 10 minutes,” She nodded and kissed him back turning her eyes back to the stage as he wondered off. Sarah watched the last band until he came back, though he never left her thoughts, this guy was turning out to be more interesting than she’d ever imagined.

He was right about the more upmarket restaurant and she had to admit it wasn’t quite to her taste until she saw the menu. The place was very modern and shiny giving images of tiny portions of food that no one could really pronounce or would ever actually cook. However, it turned out to have some of the best middle eastern cuisines as well, and the fact hummus appeared at their table as they sat down sold the place to Sarah.

They ordered drinks and chatted about the different foods, Sarah momentarily forgetting she’d just watched this man on stage. It was so easy to just chat to him, to listen to his stories, for him to listen to her; it just worked. It had been a while since she’d found anyone this easy to talk to.
She wondered for a split second if this is what Lilly had with Tom, and if it was then they should bloody well fight for it. But what if it wasn’t?

Sarah spotted him at the exact moment he spotted her, she was looking around to spot the waiter with their drinks while he was being shown to the table by said waiter. Typical you’re famous you get served first.

Why was it that this man appeared everyone and yet the moment her and Taylor had hoped to spot Zacky Vengeance or M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold walking out of the O2 arena or their hotel (yes they’d stalked them) when in London they’d had no such luck. Typical.

He looked straight at her, he gave a nod of acknowledgement, while she waved causing Adam to look round at who she had spotted. Adam opened his mouth to speak them turned back to Sarah with a look of confusion that slowly turned to recognition.

“Fuck isn’t he, shit I’ve seen him somewhere, he’s that bloody dude who-“

“That’s Tom,” Sarah explained sighing as the man walked towards another table and sat down with some friends. “Look can you give me five seconds with him?”

“My girl goes to chat to another man on my date, no a god, my mistake, but you know what I’m confident enough to know she’ll come back,”

“Of course, I will come back silly! You’re a Rockstar anyway!” Sarah laughed. “And, I’m more a Captain America girl myself,” She winked pressing a kiss against Adam’s cheek before sashaying off towards Tom. He just chuckled watching her go before turning back to the menu.

“Sarah,” Tom smiled politely at her, he’d watched her walking towards him and was already getting up as she reached the table.

“Do you have a few minutes?” He nodded standing up in front of her and putting a hand in the middle of her back.

“The balcony is open, I get the feeling this is not dinner conversation,”

“I’m not Taylor,” Sarah said simply with a sweet smile. “I am hoping for a Disney happy ending if I am completely honest,” Tom chuckled at her response. “And you Prince Charming are going to give it to me, I see myself as a bit of a Mrs Potts, I know I’m mixing my Disney films and all but-“

“Sarah?”

“Yes,” Tom smiled at her. “There is nothing I can do,”

“Oh but there is, she likes you,”

“She doesn’t like my life and that is a very hard thing to change,”

“She likes you though,” Sarah repeated. Tom looked down at Sarah, she saw the sadness in his eyes
but it wasn’t a new sadness he hadn’t just realised this, he looked older, wiser, this was not the first time he’d seen this event unfold. “This has happened before?” Tom raised his eyebrows this girl was perceptive…or a mind reader as she’d once tried to convince him at the takeaway night.

“Sarah you care for your friend a lot, I know that, and I don’t want to be the one to hurt her even more. Lilly will find a nice stable guy who has all the time for her and does not live for his work, he will make her happy, I will not,”

“Tom?”

“Yes?”

“You suck,” He couldn’t help but laugh at that comment. “Relationships suck,”

“Well you seem happy with your new fellow,” He smiled looking over her shoulder at the man that had been watching him and Sarah interact intently.

“We are but that is not-“

“Yes, Sarah it is the point, now go and have a lovely evening,” He shot her that winning smile, she could see what woman saw in this man, and brushed past her. God he was infuriating.

“You know,” Adam muttered sipping his beer and watching Tom. “I’ve never really seen a famous person all the time I’ve lived here, but this guy he just keeps popping up where ever you go?” Sarah nodded turning around to face Adam.

“Now tell me,” She smiled sweetly at him. “When exactly did you become a Rock star?” He laughed loudly cute creases appearing at the corner of his eyes. The laughter, jokes, and finding out more about each other continued for the rest of the night. It was the perfect date.
