Don't Let Me Jump, Don't Let Me Fall

Prelude: The Cliff Angel

Living near the coast comes with a worry. A shadow, almost.
Living near the coast terrifies Jack.
But he wouldn't ever move.
5 minutes away from the 25 year olds house, is a cliff.
A tall, steep cliff.
Ever since Jack was young, his parents would say, over and over, 'Stay away from the edge.'
So he did.
And he told his friends to stay away when they got too close for his liking.
He was wary of the drop.

Jack was 21 when he made his decision.
He hated the cliffs.

She was 17. Only a kid in Jack's eyes.
She was his best friend.
Her name was Amber.
It's engraved into the wood cemented into the ground on the cliff edge.

Our angel regained her wings.

Amber was sad.
Jack knew it.
He tried to help her.
But she was beyond repair.
She jumped.

She wasn't the first.
Nor the last.
Every person to jump or fall got a wooden plaque with their name and a message, cemented into the ground.
Jack counted them one night. His torch shining onto each one, some old and some new.
27.
27 people had died because of the cliff.

And that's how Jack ended up where he is today.

They call him the cliff angel.
They being his friends, family and the people who live nearest the deadly cliff.
He spends his nights walking up and down the cliff.
Looking for people.
Saving people.

He's saved 5 lives in the 2 years he's been doing it.
And that means the world to him.
Even if it does mean he has to go to work at 1 in the afternoon at the coffee shop down the road, come home at 6 in the evening, get dinner, leave the house at 9 or 10 at night, patrol until 6 in the morning, go home, sleep, wake up for work at midday. He only patrols nights. The beach life guards are in charge during the day.

His days jumble into one, but to Jack, it's the most rewarding thing he could do with his life.
