Say You Don’t Want It

Twenty-Four: Who Do You Think You Are?

Standing outside of Aliyah and Alexis’ home, Cristiano sighed to himself, mentally preparing himself to see Alexis again. He knew that it wasn’t going to be pleasant, Alexis had looked utterly furious when she had stormed out of the restaurant, but he knew that he had to do it. Avoiding Alexis wasn’t something he could do, even if it did mean listening to her yell at him for his stupid behaviour, he just couldn’t leave it in limbo. Shaking his head slightly, he lifted his hand and tapped it against the door, pausing for a few moments before Aliyah pulled it open. “You have some nerve” she murmured “Lexi came home an hour ago, crying, and she refuses to come out of her room. I assume it is your doing” she added, her eyes narrowed on him slightly.

Cristiano peeked at the other woman and nodded.

“Then why are you here?” Aliyah muttered “She’s not going to speak to you if you are the reason that she cried” she added.

“I just want the chance to talk to her” Cristiano explained gently. He knew it wasn’t going to make things better, if anything, being near Alexis was only likely to make her more angry and upset, but he just wanted to explain himself. What he had done had been stupid, but he had done it for what he thought was the right reasons and he wanted to tell her that. He had only done it to avoid losing her.

“What did you even do?” Aliyah murmured.

“Something very stupid, but I would like to explain myself. Please, Aliyah, I just want to see her” he whimpered, his brown eyes staring down at the other woman. Aliyah offered him a dubious look, but stepped out of the way, allowing him over the threshold.

“You have ten minutes. If you can’t fix what you did in that, then you are done, got it?” she murmured.

Cristiano nodded his head and thanked her quickly before he padded down the hall, quickly locating Alexis’ bedroom. “Lexi?” he murmured, stopping at the door. “Alexis, I know you are upset with me, but I just want to explain myself. Can I come in?” he mused, his head resting against the door, his heart shuddering at the sounds of her muffled whimpers. He hated it, the idea that something he had done had hurt her, but he couldn’t undo it. He had made a decision in a split second and now it looked as though that decision would cost him something he loved very much. “Lexi, please” he whispered “I just want to….” His voice trailed off as Alexis pulled the door open, her tearful blue eyes glaring up at him.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” she muttered, her voice wavering with a sob.

Cristiano’s chest clenched. He had doubted he had ever seen her so upset before.

“Cristiano” Alexis hissed “I asked what you wanted” she added.

“I wanted to talk to you, to explain. Lexi, it wasn’t what it sounded like” he protested feebly.

Alexis snorted. “It sounded like Hector came to you with a job offer for me and then you turned it down, without a second thought about me and what I wanted” she snapped.

“It wasn’t like that” Cristiano protested.

Alexis shook her head. “Then what was it like Ronaldo? Because, from where I am standing, it looks like you made a whacking great decision on my behalf and lied about our relationship just so I would never know about it. Please, explain which part I got wrong” she hissed, sarcasm and anger dripping off her words like venom.

Cristiano sighed. “Lexi” he whimpered.

“Don’t you call me that” she snapped “Who the heck do you think you are?” she added.

Cristiano opened and closed his mouth a couple of times, desperately trying to conjure some sort of response. He knew that it was wrong, lying to Hector had been a mistake he had regretted the instant he had done it, but he hadn’t wanted to lose Alexis. Manchester and Paris were miles away from him and he doubted he would have been able to handle a long distance relationship. It was a lot of the reason that his last relationship hadn’t worked out.

Alexis shook her head. “Just get out of here” she murmured.

“No” Cristiano replied.

“I don’t want you here” Alexis murmured before she turned to walk back into her bedroom.

“I didn’t want you to leave me” Cristiano blurted out.

Alexis paused. “What?” she murmured.

“Hector told me about his contact, he said that there was interest in you from Manchester United and PSG and I didn’t want to lose you. You’re a wonderful photographer Lexi and I was sure something else would come along for you, something in Madrid, and I didn’t want you to go, so I lied to Hector so that he didn’t try to call you and then I didn’t tell about it because I knew this is how you’d react if I did. I love you Alexis and I didn’t want to lose that” he rambled, tears gathering quickly in his brown eyes.

Alexis admired them for a second before she shook her head. “You had no right to make that call for me” she muttered.

“I know” Cristiano breathed, his voice heavy with sadness “And I regretted doing it instantly. That’s why I have been acting so odd” he whispered.

“Cristiano, I am not going to spend my life being your stay-at-home girlfriend. I love spending time with you, and with Junior, but I want to forge something for myself. I don’t want to be one of those girls known for just letting you pay for everything. I appreciate that you didn’t want me to leave, but that wasn’t your decision to make, it was mine and I cannot stomach that you thought that you could make it for me” she murmured softly.

“There will be something else” Cristiano protested “Something better and here in Madrid. You don’t need to talk to Hector and his contact” he spat.

Alexis sighed. “I do” she murmured “And I also have to do this” she added, her hand gently moving up to cup his cheek. “Cristiano, I am sorry, but I cannot be with a man who does what you did. You made a choice about my life without even a second thought about what I wanted and you also didn’t trust me enough to talk to you when Hector offered me the job. Lo siento, Cristiano, but this is where we end” she murmured before she pressed little kiss to his cheek.

“Alexis” he whimpered “I am sorry” he added.

Alexis swallowed. “I am too” she whispered before she padded back into the room, slamming the door closed once more.

Cristiano looked at the closed door and sighed. “I love you” he whimpered to the door before he turned on his heel.

He doubted there was anything he could do.
