Say You Don’t Want It

Thirty-Seven: I Love Her Very Much

“Alex?” Cristiano murmured gently, his hand gently shaking her shoulder. It was early, normally too early for the blonde girl who had a tendency to sleep in, but he wanted to see her before he made his way to training. It wasn’t every day that his girlfriend turned 23 and he wanted the chance to wish her a happy birthday before he was rushed off to a day of training and photoshoots. He wasn’t going to get much of a chance otherwise. “Alex, baby, come on” he muttered, gently shaking her shoulder again “I want to see you before I go to work” he added.

Alexis stirred a little before she rolled onto her back, her blue eyes peeking up at him sleepily. “Why are you waking me up?” she murmured gently “It’s barely past nine” she added, her tired eyes glancing at the alarm clock that sat on the end table.

Cristiano smiled. “Because it is your birthday” he noted gently “And because, thanks to Jorge and his inability to schedule me the day off, I am going to be gone for most of the day” he added.

Alexis peeked at him before she sighed. She was a little disappointed, she had hoped to spend some of the day with him and some with her parents and Aliyah who also seemed desperate to see her, but she knew she couldn’t ask him to mess his schedule around for her. It simply wasn’t fair. “How long are you going to be gone?” she posed, snuggling into her pillow once more.

“Most of the day. I have training, then a meeting, and then a photoshoot, but I also have a reservation for eight at one of the nicest restaurants in town. Meet me there?” he suggested gently. He could see that she was upset, even if she hadn’t said it, but he couldn’t skip out on the meeting. He had plans to meet with Elijah and ask his girlfriend’s father a question he had been itching to ask for a while. He knew that it was still fast, they had just entered February, something which meant he and Alexis had been dating for eleven months, but he simply couldn’t hold out any longer. He was sure about Alexis, he had been since he had first met her, and he wanted to ask Elijah for his permission, no matter how old fashioned it was, he wanted to do it right.

Alexis looked up at him and nodded. “I will see you there, just text me an address” she murmured, gently snuggling down into her quilt.

Cristiano smiled at the sight gently before he ducked down, pressing a little kiss to her forehead. “Happy birthday Alex” he noted gently before he padded out of the room, offering her another soft look. He knew that it was going to be tough, Elijah still wasn’t the warmest when it came to his daughter’s boyfriend, but Cristiano wanted to convince him. He wanted to marry Alexis and he didn’t want to wait around for much longer.

Peeking around the restaurant that Cristiano had arranged to meet him in, Elijah Moreno sighed, his stomach turning at the thought of being alone with his daughter’s boyfriend. It was nothing personal, Cristiano had proved himself to be a wonderful match for Alexis who seemed happier than ever, but still Elijah was dubious. Hugo had been a good match for his daughter too and he hated the notion that something like that could happen again. It wasn’t likely, whenever he did see the footballer, he looked absolutely besotted with Alexis, but he would always be a little wary. He hadn’t seen Hugo’s change coming and didn’t want to be caught off guard again.

“Senor Moreno?”

The older man looked up at the sight of the footballer and nodded, offering him a tight smile as he shook his hand.

“I am glad that you could make it. I didn’t give you much notice” Cristiano mused gently, taking his seat opposite the older man.

Elijah shrugged. “You should thank my wife, she is the reason I am here” he murmured gently.

Cristiano sighed. He knew the older man still didn’t like him, Elijah had never tried to get on with him, but he hoped the older man wouldn’t try and cause trouble. He just wanted to ask him one question. “Sir, I don’t want to make this awkward” he announced gently “I only want to ask you one thing and then you can go” he added.

Elijah nodded. “I think I know what you are going to ask” he murmured “And I have to say, I am a little surprised that we have reached this point. I was expecting you and Lexi to have ended things by now” he added.

Cristiano shook his head. “I love your daughter, sir, very much” he noted softly “She’s wonderful and I know just how lucky I am to have held her interest for this long. I want to be with Alexis and I want to be with her for a very long time. Senor Moreno, I would like to ask your permission to ask Alexis to marry me” he explained gently, his eyes peeking tentatively at the older man.

Elijah nodded. He wasn’t surprised by the question, it had been coming for a while, but he was still wary. Alexis was his little girl and he doubted he would ever see any man as good enough to be her husband.

“I know you don’t like me” Cristiano noted “I know you have your doubts, but I would like to think that I have made Alexis happy in the 11 months that we have seeing one another and I would like to continue with that. I want to marry her, I want to give her a family, and I would like it if I could have your blessing to do that” he explained softly.

“Cristiano, I am nervous” Elijah sighed “Hugo….”

“I am not him, and I will never be him, sir” Cristiano interjected “I love your daughter and I won’t hurt her” he added.

Elijah nodded. “I know that, but I am still wary. She is my daughter, Cristiano, I just don’t want her upset” he murmured.

Cristiano nodded. “I can’t promise that it will never happen, sir, but I can strive to make sure that Alexis lives a happy life. Please, I just want to know that you have no objections to me asking your daughter to be my wife” he noted.

Elijah studied his face for a moment before he cracked a small smile. “You have my permission” he noted, causing Cristiano to smile widely. He couldn’t wait to get down on one knee for Alexis.
