Say You Don’t Want It

Thirty-Nine: Take It

Puffing out another breath, Cristiano moved to complete another sit-up, sweat dripping down his face. He knew it wasn’t the most constructive thing to do, he should have spent his time speaking with people in an attempt to be rational, but he simply couldn’t bring himself to. He knew that he would get from people, they would all tell him that if he loved Alexis, he should let her go and trust that she would come back, but that wasn’t what Cristiano wanted. He didn’t want her to leave, he didn’t want to have to hope that she didn’t meet a better man, he wanted her close. He wanted her to marry him.

It wasn’t fair of him, he knew that Alexis would want to take the job, but he simply couldn’t bring himself to give her the green light. If she left, then he would start to worry unnecessarily, they would start to fight and before he knew it, he would be calling Alexis his ex-girlfriend, something he was sure that he didn’t want. He loved her, more than any one he had ever loved before, and the thought of losing her sent a cold shock down his spine. He didn’t quite know what he would do without her.

Working through another sit-up, he reached for his bottle of water before he spotted the figure in the door way, something which made him shake his head. “I don’t want to talk about it, not yet” he murmured, quickly resuming his workout.

Alexis sighed. “Cris, it has been two days, Hector is calling this afternoon” she murmured, her blue eyes peeking down at him.

Cristiano shook his head. “I don’t want to talk about it Alex” he muttered.

“You don’t have a choice. I want to give Hector an answer this afternoon and that isn’t going to happen unless we talk. You’ve barely said two words to me Cris and I want to know what you think” she noted as she gently sat down ahead of him. She knew that she was struggling, Iker and Sergio had been quick to inform her of how strange he had been in training for the last couple of days, and she just wanted to get it over with. She hated the idea that she was upsetting him.

Cristiano peeked at her before he took his bottle of water, taking a gulp before he sighed. “What do you want me to say Alex?” he murmured.

“I want to know what you think about me going to work in Barcelona” Alexis replied.

Cristiano shook his head. “I don’t know” he murmured.

Alexis frowned. “You don’t know?” she posed “Cristiano, you must have some sort of opinion” she noted.

Cristiano shrugged. “Alex, I don’t know” he repeated, his eyes not meeting hers.

“You must know” she muttered “You either want me to take it or you don’t” she added.

“Alex…”

“It isn’t hard Cristiano” she interjected.

“Fine” he huffed “I hate it as an idea. I hate that you could be living in a completely different city to me and that I wouldn’t be able to see you whenever I want. I hate that you will be around those men, any man for that matter, and that I won’t be there to fend them off. I hate it, Alex, I hate the idea of you leaving, and that is what I think” he snarled, his brown eyes glaring up at her bitterly. He hadn’t wanted to yell, he knew that it would do no good, but he hadn’t been able to help it. Alexis had pressed him and he had snapped.

Alexis peeked at him. “You don’t want me to take it?” she posed.

“Alexis, I want you to be happy” he murmured “But I hate that it could take a move to Barcelona to do it” he added.

Alexis looked at him briefly before she returned her attention to the floor, pulling absently at a piece of material on her shirt. “I don’t want to be just your girlfriend” she murmured gently.

“What?” Cristiano murmured.

“I don’t want to just be Cristiano Ronaldo’s girlfriend. I want to do something for myself, earn my own money. I love you, but I need to have a life of my own” she admitted softly.

Cristiano sighed. “You want to take it?” he sighed.

“I want both” she admitted sheepishly. She knew that it was stupid, taking the job in Barcelona practically guaranteed that she and Cristiano would break up, but she couldn’t help but want both. She wanted her independence, but she didn’t want it to come at the expense of her relationship with Cristiano. She loved him and wanted to be with him.

Cristiano sighed. “I don’t like long distance, Alex” he murmured.

“I know, and I feel selfish for even saying it, but I love you and I don’t want this job to be the reason that I stop having you. I will call Hector, I will tell him thanks, but no thanks” she noted as she moved to push herself to her feet. Cristiano watched her and reached out, his hand gently curling around her petite wrist.

“Alex, I can’t let you do that” he murmured.

“Yes, you can” Alexis replied, offering him a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes “I will be fine” she added.

Cristiano sighed and climbed to his feet. “No, you won’t. You want it Lexi, the job, and I am not going to be the reason you don’t take it. If it makes you happy…”

“But it would make you miserable” Alexis replied “And I don’t want to do that” she added.

“Alex” he whined.

“Cristiano, you are more important to me than the job and if you don’t think we can make long distance work, then I will stay. I want both, but I want you more” she explained softly before the sound of her mobile phone echoed, causing them both to stare down at it.

“That will be Hector” she noted, staring at the sleek device forlornly.

Cristiano nodded.

“I will tell him” she noted as she reached out for the phone.

Cristiano watched her for a second before he reached out ahead of her, causing her to stare up at him. “You should take it” he murmured.

Alexis shook her head. “Not if it means that we…”

“I am not saying we break up Lexi. I am saying you should take the job in Barcelona because it would make you happy and then we can figure the rest out afterwards. I want you to smile Lexi, like you mean it” he whispered.

Alexis stared up at him wide eyed before she answered the phone. “Hector?” she murmured “I would like the interview” she added. Cristiano smiled at her as she ended the call and wrapped his arms around her.

“You’re amazing” she murmured, hugging him tightly.

Cristiano smiled at her before he closed his eyes, breathing deeply for a second before he peeled back from her, kneeling down on the ground. “Alex, marry me” he whispered.

Alexis startled. “What?” she whispered.

“I want to marry you, regardless of the job or anything else, I just want to know that you and me isn’t just a phase. I love you, I want to live my life with you. Alexis, marry me?” he whispered.

Alexis blinked softly before she nodded. “Yes” she whispered “I…I will” she added.

Cristiano chuckled sheepishly and stood back up, enveloping her in a tight hug.

It was going to take a lot of work, a lot of adaption, but he wanted to do it and he hoped she did too.
