Empty With You

Bruises and Trust

The ice pack stung against my lip as I sat on the edge of the mat. My ribs hurt as I took a deep breath in. Tobias put up a good fight and I landed a fairly good punch on the side of his face and ended up knocking him down. It was then when he stopped because I knew, while fighting me, he felt like Marcus. The one thing that haunted him and I knew this fight was more painful for him than me.

My bruises would heal, but his were all in his head. Those things just don't go away so easily.

"Wow, you look like hell," I head a voice chuckle as I looked up to see two people approach me, a guy and girl.

"I'm fine," I looked up at them. "You're both Dauntless born?"

"Yeah," The guy nodded. "I'm Zeke and this is Shauna."

"Ariana," I nodded as I took the ice pack off my face.

"Four was really upset about that fight," Zeke mentioned.

"You know Four?" I questioned.

"Just cause we train seperately, doesn't mean we don't hang out in the Pit," Shauna smirked.

"Oh," I nodded. "Right."

"Well, to be fair, she's usually around that Eric boy," Zeke smirked.

"Because to be fair, he's my boyfriend," I half glared back.

"Doesn't mean you can't make new friends," Shauna suggested.

"True," I thought for a second. "So you're friends with Four?"

"Yeah," Zeke nodded. "He's a pretty interesting character. Doesn't say much about himself."

"No, but he means well," I smiled at the thought.

"Ariana?" I heard a voice through the dark halls of room as I seen Four's figure step into it. "Are you-"

"I'm fine," I nodded with a slight smile. "It's fine."

"I-" He started to say but hugged me quickly. "I'm sorry."

"It's ok," I whispered in his ear. "You're nothing like him."

"Do you two know each other?" Zeke questioned as I broke away from Four with a smirk.

"It's complicated," I shrugged.

"And that scar?" Shauna questioned.

"Even more complicated," I giggled but looked at Four. "You're probably going to get threatened by Eric now but he's pretty protective of me lately."

"Well we're going to get lunch if you wanna come with us," Zeke nodded at the door. "I'm starved."

"Sure," I shrugged as Four shrugged.

"You're boyfriend won't mind?" Shauna questioned.

"Psh, if he does, I can take him," I smirked. "He's not the rebel one in the first place."

"Oh, that's right, you're the girl who caused a commotion yesterday," Zeke nodded. "We got lectured forever on how we should respect our instructors and being a rebel is a sign of well problems, I guess."

"Yeah," I rolled my eyes. "I hear that a lot."

"Let's get food," Four tried to change the subject as we followed them towards the Pit where everyone was gathering for lunch.

"Hey, we'll catch up with you guys," I nodded to them.

"Sure," Zeke shrugged, "We'll save you a seat."

Zeke and Shauna walked into the doors in front of us as I pushed Four back a bit into the dark hallway, away from others and cameras that I've noted around the area. I double checked to make sure that we were alone before my eyes met his again.

"No seriously," I whispered at him. "Why'd you choose here?"

"I-" Four started.

"Because honestly, I'm seeing why everyone else picked here but you and I, we don't-" I started as I felt my heart race.

"Belong anywhere?" Four raised an eyebrow.

"What were your test results?" I questioned as he shifted in his spot slightly and I rolled my eyes. "Don't do that to me, I know that look."

"What were yours?" Four countered back as I kept a hand on his chest and looked around me again.

"They were inconclusive," I whispered quieter than normal. "They were Candor, Erudite, and Dauntless."

"Well then, you're a pretty messed up person," Four mumbled as I shoved him slightly.

"Four!" I hissed in a hushed whisper.

"Ari-" He rolled his eyes but met mine since I just trusted him with something big, something I didn't even tell Eric.

"They call it Divergent," I whispered as I swallowed hard. "Not that it matters to you or anything but-"

"I know," Four hung his head as he barely looked at me. "My results were inconclusive as well."

"Divergent?" I whispered as he nodded.

"I was told not to tell anyone or say anything because it's dangerous," His eyes met mine.

"Because being a Divergent is dangerous or them knowing is?" I swallowed hard.

"Both," Four nodded as the sound of people around us broke the silence.

"We'll talk later," I whispered quickly. "Met me at the Library in the heart of the city tonight."

I moved away from Four to walk back into the Pit and found Eric with a few other initates, laughing and talking about something. I walked up to him and slid my arms around his waist to rest my head on his shoulder as some of the girls around gave me a dirty look which honestly made me smirk.

"Hey," Eric kissed the top of my head. "How you feeling?"

"Still sore, but I'll be fine," I smiled at him.

"Oh Ari," Eric directed his attention to the group in front of him. "This is Evan, Jamie, Tyler, Stacey, and Jordan."

I looked up at all the people talking to him, Jamie and Stacey being the two girls giving me dirty looks. "Hey."

"They're in our training group, and guys this is Ariana," Eric smiled. "My gorgeous and tough girlfriend."

"You're that girl who's amazing at knife throwing," The one with blond hair and a few tattoos and piercing smiled, I think it was Tyler.

"That was me," I smirked at him.

"A few of us are going out to the zipline tonight," The boy with brown hair and deep brown eyes, Evan, looked at the two of us. "You up for it?"

"Sounds fun," Eric shrugged.

"I'm actually going to stay around here," I looked at him. "My ribs just hurt a bit yet."

"You sure?" Eric gave me a look.

"Yeah," I nodded with a smile. "You go have fun, maybe some other time?"

"Of course," Evan smiled.

"I swear if Four-" Eric whispered in my ear.

"It's not his fault," I half glared at him. "He was just doing what he was told. It could've been you instead of him."

"Yeah but-" Eric tried to argue with me.

"And I'd want you to hold nothing back," I rested my head on my shoulder. "Because I know you wouldn't mean it."

"Sometimes you're too tough for your own good, Ari," Eric kissed my forehead again.

"I know but you still love me," I smiled slightly.

"That I do," He chuckled.

"You too are so sappy," Tyler shook his head as I flipped him.

"You only wish you had what we do," Eric smirked at him.

"I'm going to go get food," I kissed Eric's cheek, "Meet you by the chasm in like half an hour?"

"Of course," Eric smirked with a wink as I rolled my eyes.

"Stop winking, it's creepy," I shuddered as I started to walk away.

"Okay, she's cool," Even chuckled as I smirked and walked towards the table where Four, Shauna, and Zeke were sitting.

I sat at the table slumped with slightly with Zeke, Shauna, and Four as my head met the cold table and I groaned.

"You okay?" Shauna asked.

"My ribs just hurt," I mumbled into the table top.

"I'm sorry," Four apologized again.

"Don't," I looked up at him. "You don't need to apologize. And Dauntless don't apologize."

"She's right," Zeke pointed out. "We're the toughest faction there is."

Zeke went on about something but I didn't pay attention since I just looked at Four and gave him that look that he should stop apologizing. The two of us were both something that not many people were and something that was a threat to everything. If we wanted to stay alive and out of trouble, we'd have to learn how to fit into this world and not let people know what we are.

After eating an apple since I wasn't too hungry, I met Eric next to the Chasm. He stood next to the railing, back to it, and his arms crossed as I walked up to him. My feet stopped in front of him as I kept my hands in my pockets and he looked up at me.

"Hey," I smiled at him lightly.

"I still can't get over that." Eric reached up slowly to touch my lip. "No one hurts you like that."

"You know it's bound to happen again, at least with initation still," I rolled my eyes.

"I know but I swore I would never let anyone hurt you or touch you like that again, and if I didn't say it out loud, I'm saying it right now," Eric's thumb ran across my cheek. "I will stand in the way of anyone who will try to hurt or harm you."

"Thank you," I smiled lightly.

"Are you sure you don't want to come out to the zipline tonight?" Eric searched my lips as I shook my head against his hand.

"I want to but my ribs seriously still hurt and that wouldn't be exactly fun right now," I mentioned.

"So would it be wrong to want to kiss you right now?" Eric watched me as a smirk appeared across my face.

"Just be gentle," I snickered and wrapped my arms around his neck. "Kinda have a lip bruise too."

"Mmm, I so wish I didn't have to be gentle with you right now," Eric pressed his body against mine some.

"Such a bad kid," I smirked as his hands travled down to my hips. "And tempting."

"But?" Eric raised an eyebrow.

"But, don't we have to get back to training?" I questioned.

"We can be quick," He countered.

"Fine," I rolled my eyes. "But only because I really missed doing certain things with you."

"I know you did," Eric smirked and kissed my cheek.

"Come on, I know a place," I took his hand.

"I always forget you know a bit about everyone's faction," He chuckled as he followed me down the hall.

"Hey, be nice, I could just take you out for a joy ride again," I turned to look at him.

"Yeah no, let's stay on the good side of everyone," He mentioned only to hear my laugh. "I feel like sex is a lot better of an option than stealing a car."

"Possibly," I looked back at him. "Guess we're just going to have to test one of the two."
