Life as We Knew It

Sacrifice

The roamers were too close. The group members around her quickly ran out of ammo, leaving only Gareth, Sam, and Rebecca with guns. There was no way out, the roamers were circling all around them. It was obvious: some people were gonna die. "What are we gonna d- AHHHHHHHHH!" the man behind Gareth cried out as a roamer teared into his shoulder, leading several others to begin to eat his flesh. Gareth and Rebecca quickly shot the roamers eating him, the other group members watching their back. "Oh god, he's gonna turn!" Rebecca cried. Gareth then did something that Rebecca thought she would never be able to do, even though she knew it was the right choice- he shot him in the head. When Gareth looked up at her, she nodded sadly in understanding. "Gareth! We- we have to do something! Or else we're all gonna die!" Rebecca cried as she shot down several more roamers, tears streaming down her face and her eyes red and puffy. She could see the desperation to live in his face, and his eyes were mad with fright. "There's only one thing we can do," he yelled over the snarls and groans of the roamers, "RUN THROUGH! FOLLOW ME!" And he was off, running as fast as his legs could carry him. There was no denying he was fast as he pushed through the roamers, shooting and hitting them with the head of his gun, and then he was out of sight. Gareth was gone.

"Gareth! NOOO!" Rebecca screamed, but she held her place. "No saving him now! Stand your ground!" Sam yelled, seeing that Gareth was out of view, and most likely dead. Several other screams rung out among them, and Rebecca flipped her head around to see Mary being devoured. Then Josh. One by one, their fellow group members were dying. Sam knew the situation was hopeless. He looked at Rebecca, desperation and sadness in his eyes. "You have to run. I'll stay here- hold 'em off," Sam said hopelessly. "No. No! I won't leave you to deal with these things alone!" Rebecca cried. "YOU HAVE TO!," he screamed at her, causing her to jump back. "Run to the RV! My wife- my son, they're safe in there, last time I saw them," he cried, searching for more words to say, "Tell them I'm gonna make it back. I promise. NOW GO!" And surprisingly, she did.

She ran through an open space, all the roamers attracted to the gun shots of Sam. Even though she felt like laying down and crying- like giving up, she kept going. She couldn't give up now, not when Sam was most likely dead because of her. Dying would be an insult to his possible death. Making sure no roamers spotted her, she ran to the edge of the forest and hit behind a tree, thinking up a plain in her head. And then, she saw it- the RV. Her heart stopped. It was surrounded by roamers. Bodies of people she used to know lay everywhere. Nowhere was safe. Everyone was dead. Before she could help it, she started sobbing. Reality hit her. She had nothing. But, her sister could still be other there. Just as she was about to run off deeper into the forest, when she heard screams from inside the RV. She looked up- the roamers were crowding by the door. But, she spotted a ladder on the side of the RV. Her eyes followed the ladder till where it ended- the top. It could lead to a hatch to the inside! She made a run for it, dodging several roamers along the way and quickly made her way up the ladder. Breathing heavily and shaking, she twisted the handle to the hatch- but it wouldn't budge. She looked down at the hatch window to see Jack and Corinne- but no Lily. "Hey!," she screamed to them inside the RV, "HEY!" "Rebecca!" Corinne and Jack said together, but they were both obviously extremely scared, hinted by their red faces and tear-stained cheeks. "Where's your mom?" Rebecca cried down to Jack through the hatch window. "We were trying to find the key to the hatch- but we can't find it! Help us, I-I don't wanna die like this!" Jack cried. Rebecca's heart stopped when she realized something- Gareth had the hatch key! "Guys, Gareth has the hatch key.... I-I'm sorry, but we're gonna find another way! I promise!" Rebecca said to them, and then Lily came into view, her eyes filled with fear and tears. "We don't have time! There is no other way!" Lily screamed, motioning the frying pan she had to the RV door. But then she realized something, and then she smiled. "The hatch window-" Lily cried. She looked up at it in delight. "It's way too small!" Rebecca cried, "Only Jack and Corinne could-" Rebecca gasped when she realized what Lily meant. "No! No! Please don't do this, Lily," Rebecca sobbed, frantically trying to find another way out for her friends. Jack was pleading for his mother to listen to their reasoning, to stay, to help them find another way out. "There is no other way- this is the only way," she cried, and with that, she broke the hatch window with the frying pan. Glass rained down on them. She bent down, looking at the RV door, which was shaking, roamers desperately trying to get in. She grabbed her son's hands, clutching them warmly, and looked him in the eye. "This is the right choice. This is what I want. I love you. I love you so, so much. You're gonna survive- you're gonna live in this world, you hear me? I love you. Now go!" Lily, his mother, cried, her voice breaking. But, she wanted to stay strong. For him. Jack was at a loss of words, and he was sobbing. Corinne, already on top of the RV, couldn't help but cry as she remembered that her mother was dead- Lily had acted like a motherly figure toward her ever since her mother had been devoured and now she was going to die. Rebecca felt Jack's pain. Her mother and father were most likely dead. Lily hoisted Jack up through the RV window, his body barely fitting through. Once he was on top of the RV, he stared back at his mother, tears running down his face. His mother stared right back at him. The stars above them twinkled, and Rebecca couldn't help but watch them. "I love you, Jack," Lily said, finally giving up the strong act and letting tears running down her face. But, she smiled. Jack looked at his mom's face for the last time. And finally, Jack spoke, "I love you, too, mom." And right at that moment, the RV door broke down, and roamers rushed in.
