Life as We Knew It
Safe & Sound
Rebecca smiled to herself, hitting the target once again. Even when the others had went back to camp to eat dinner, she had stayed there by herself, and practiced shooting over and over again. And she hadn't spotted a single one of those things. She had recalled Gareth saying that the camp was too far out, that the roamers would never reach camp. For the first time in what seemed like forever, she felt safe. The sky was darker, the moon barely visible, but enough of it showing to illuminate the whole sky. In an alternate universe, Rebecca would be hanging out with her friends, and her new boyfriend. Everything would he normal. She would be laughing next to a campfire, roasting marshmallows without a care in the world. Tears swelled her eyes and her gun slipped out of her hand. Between all the chaos that had happened in two weeks, she had never given herself the time to mourn what was lost. Her friends, her family, her parents... and all on her birthday. The terror she had felt on the first day, the first day everything happened, the first day the world ended, it would never go away. All she has is her sister, Amber. It isn't enough, but it's something. She desperately hoped that her sister would he okay, that she would come back to her. A snap of a branch suddenly pulled Rebecca into reality. Most likely Jack trying to scare me, again, Amber thought, carelessly walking over to the edge of the clearing, which was surrounded by a thick forest, a small smirk on her face. But he wasn't there. "Hello?" Amber called, peeling away the leaves, her forehead covered in sweat. She gripped a large birch tree's trunk. It was eerily quiet. She shrugged, then turned around. And then she saw it. Right in front of her very eyes. She screamed in horror, desperately backing away.

It stared at her, snarling noisily and decayed. Run! she urged at her legs, but they wouldn't move. Frozen in terror, she watched helplessly as the roamer staggered closer, then pounced. Just in time, her legs moved. She rolled out of the way, smacking into a birch tree branch next to her. She felt a sting of pain on her right arm, and fell to the ground. The roamer closed in on her, and with all the strength she could muster in her injured arm, she pulled a lingering branch out of the thick moss it was tangled in. It chose this time to tackle her, and pulled at her peach-colored leg. With a yell, she brought the stick onto the roamer's head, and its grip loosened. Her face pale and eyes blurry with tears, she brought the stick down on the roamer's head over and over again, until its grip loosened on her leg completely, its now deformed head barely visible in all the crimson-colored blood. She gripped her arm with her hand, and when she let go, it was covered in bright red blood. She whimpered and drearily stood up, her vision a little bit fuzzy. She could hear shouts, she saw people running towards her, and then another sound. Lots of other sounds. But they weren't words, or screams, or laughs, or cries. She stumbled up. The others were closer now, Gareth coming into view. They were so close, but seemed so far away. He was so close to her, but then he stopped. His mouth gaped in what Rebecca could describe as pure terror, and he whipped out his gun. The others had the same expression as Gareth. It was darker now, the once bright blue sky almost completely consumed by the night. "Run!" Gareth screamed at her, "Run, Rebecca, run!" he pointed behind her. At that moment, she finally turned around.

Fifty. At least fifty roamers were staggering, creating an eerie harmony of hungry groans. Rebecca finally regained complete consciousness and ran to the others, her head pounding with every step she took. The group members all lined up: Gareth, Sam, and a woman being the only ones with guns. The others had shovels and hammers. Then Rebecca suddenly remembered her gun. "My gun!" she almost yelled. The roamers were now cornering them from all directions. "Go! I'll cover you!" Sam yelled in the night over the moans of the roamers. She took a breath and her whole body shivered with fear. Rebecca ran quietly towards the roamers, now nearing the area where her gun lay. The sound of a gunshot rung through her ears as the roamers nearing her fell to the ground, several drips of blood staining the bright green grass. But, the gun was nowhere to be seen. Where is it? she thought frantically, scanning the grass in panic. Suddenly, a gleam of sliver shone in the night. She sighed in relief and ran over to it, quickly picking it off the ground just as a roamer neared her. She pressed down on the trigger. BOOM. It tumbled to the ground. After joining back with the others, her eyes fixed with concentration, she shot the roamers down, one by one. But, there was too many for them to handle. It seemed that each time they killed one, three took its place. They would have to go through this, together. There was no way out. And
there was no going back.
