I'll Be Watching You

Chapter four

It was a few days later that training camp ended. Sam's happiness knew no bounds when she found out she was on the roster. "I can't believe it. I made it," she said to herself.

"I knew you'd make it. You're a good player," came a voice from behind her. Sam jumped in surprise. Niklas laughed. "Sorry, buddy. I didn't mean to scare you," he said, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder. Sam smiled.

"It's okay. I scare really really easily," she replied. Niklas shook his head, trying not to laugh.

"You're silly you know that," he asked. Sam rolled her eyes at him, shoving him to floor to playfully wrestle with him.

"You're gonna pay for that comment," she vowed, a smirk filling her face. Niklas played along with his friend until they were on the floor laughing hysterically.

"What has gotten into you Sam," he asked, wiping the tears of laughter from his eyes. Sam just shook her head.

"I honestly have no idea. I think I was so excited about making the team that I just lost control," she replied as Niklas grabbed her hand and pulled her up.

"So since we are back in Detroit, do you wanna hang out, go to lunch and then come to my house to watch a movie," Niklas asked. Sam nodded.

"Sure! Do you mind if my friend comes? I'm sure she'd love to hang out with us," Sam replied. Niklas messed up her hair.

"Is she your girlfriend?" Sam shook her head as the two made their way to their cars.

"No. We're more like brother and sister. We've known each other since we were kids," she replied.

"How about we go to Cheli's? My former teammate owns that resturant and he could be there so you can meet him," Niklas said, leaning casually against the back of his car. Sam looked up from the text she was sending to Emily.

"Sure! I don't think I've been there before. I'll have to follow your car as I don't know where everything is. If you can tell me the address I can tell my friend. She mighta been there before but just in case." Niklas gave her the address and the two friends went their separate ways.

Sam saw Emily's car before she saw Niklas's. Emily got out of her car and greeted her best friend. "Hi, Ms. NHL player," she said, keeping her voice low for fear of people overhearing them. Sam laughed and hugged her friend.

"Hi, Em! How are you," she asked.

"I'm good. Where's your friend?" Sam grinned and spotted Niklas's car.

"He's here, so I gotta go back to my 'hockey voice' now. None of them know yet," she replied. Emily nodded and the two walked to the door of the resturant, where Niklas was waiting.

"Nicky, this is my best friend Emily Black," Sam said. Niklas extended his hand.

"Pleased to meet you, Ms. Black," he said. Emily smiled and shook Niklas's hand.

"I'm pleased to meet you, Mr. Kronwall, but you can just call me Emily. Any friend of Sam's is a friend of mine," she replied.

"Very well, Emily. Call me Nik." The three young adults made their way inside and sat down at a bar. They ordered their drinks and Niklas couldn't help but smile when he noticed who brought them over. "Well, if it isn't the owner himself! How are you doing, Cheli," he asked. Chris Chelios, the owner of Cheli's and one of the best NHL defenseman of all time, had brought their drinks and didn't seem one bit surprised to see Niklas.

"Not bad, Kronner. You know, your team looks really good this year," he said. Niklas smiled and laid a hand on Sam's shoulder.

"It does indeed. And I just happened to bring one of my new teammates with me." Chris looked at Sam and studied her for a minute.

"Sam Brown, right? You're a forward I'm assuming?" Sam smiled.

"Yes, sir." Chris smiled.

"How old are you, young man?"

"I just turned 21 a few weeks ago, sir."

"That's fine, son, just fine. And who is this fine young lady," Chris asked, turning to Emily.

"Sam's best friend, sir. My name is Emily," Emily replied.

"You're lucky to have her as a friend, Sam. She's a beautiful young lady," Chris said. Sam and Niklas laughed at Emily's bright red face.

"Oh, we're more than friends, sir. We're like brother and sister cause we grew up together since we were kids," Sam said.

"That's a good think, son. Keep your friends when you can. Well, I have to go. Good luck in your rookie year, Sam. Oh and keep an eye on Kronner for me, will ya? He's trouble." Chris walked away, leaving Sam and Emily in peals of laughter at Niklas's facial expression.

Before Niklas could give directions to his house, Emily made a request to talk to Sam in private. "I just need to talk to him about something," she explained. Emily dragged Sam out of the resturant and ordered Sam to talk in a whisper. "When are you gonna tell them," Emily asked. Sam looked nervous.

"I was thinking about telling Nicky today. He's been my number one buddy all of training camp. But, maybe I'll just tell them all when I make a name for mysef, mid-season I guess," Sam replied. Emily nodded.

"If you want to tell Nicky today, go ahead. But jsut order him to keep it quiet until mid-season," she replied. Sam agreed.

"No, you know what, I'm going to tell them all mid-season. It'll be easier this way," she decided. The two went back inside and took their seats. Niklas of course had paid their pill already. "You didn't have to pay for all that, Nicky! I coulda gotten some of it," Sam exclaimed. Niklas grinned and messed up his friend's hair. "It was my treat, buddy. I'm paying for this thing," he said.

"...and I have a little sister who lives with me. Her name is Lizzy and she is the best thing in the world," Niklas said. They were walking up the driveway to Niklas's house where Sam was spending the afternoon. She couldn't help but smile at the love in her friend's voice as he talked about his sister.

"You love her, don't you," she asked. Niklas nodded.

"She gets really excited when I come home. Just watch you'll see." They entered the house and there was no sign of the sister. "Lizzy! I'm home," Niklas called. They heard a happy yell, a door banging open, footsteps running and suddenly a young girl came racing down the stairs to her brother.

"NICKY," she yelled, jumping into her brother's arms. Sam couldn't help but smile at the childish squeal that came from Lizzy's mouth as her brother spun her around. Niklas was smiling, too, even though this happened every time he came home from a road trip or from training camp. It was a tradition he truly loved and would never get tired of. He dropped a kiss on top of her head and she giggled.

"Lizzy, I brought one of my new teammates home with me," he said. Lizzy looked up at Sam and her eyes went wide with excitement.

"Wow, you're Sam Brown right? You're a really good player! I saw some of the videos of training camp online of you and Nicky and you two worked really well together! Kinda like Pav and Hank. You'll be jut like them except you're not from Europe." Sam couldn't help but laugh at the younger girl's rant. It was really cute to her just how much like her brother Lizzy was-and she had only known her for all of 5 minutes.

"We'll be giving them a run for their money that is for sure," she replied. Lizzy giggled and then pulled hard on her brother's sleeve.

"It's movie time, Nicky," she said, her lips curving into a pout. Niklas smiled and messed up his sister's hair.

"Well, what movie do you want to watch, my dearest sister?" Lizzy looked thoughtful for a minute.

"E.T phone home," she replied. Sam choked on the water she was drinking and tears filled her eyes. That reminded her so much of the way her dad used to say those words whenever they watched it together.

"Sam," Niklas asked, concerned at the look on his younger friend's face. Sam wiped at her eyes.

"S-sorry. My d-dad used to say that b-before he d-died of c-cancer six m-months ago," she said, shaking. Niklas grabbed her arm to keep her steady for it looked like she was ready to fall over. Lizzy bit down hard on her lip, mad at herself for making Sam cry.

"I'm sorry Sam. We c-can watch a different movie," she said, blushing bright red. Sam gave her a small smile.

"No, it's fine I promise. You didn't know. I'll just deal with it." Lizzy looked unsure, but when her brother nodded at her to put the movie in, she went off to do just that. She came back a few minutes later and started to climb up on her brother's back.

"Sam, can I have your opinion on something," she asked. Sam looked at her.

"Sure, what is it?" Lizzy grinned.

"Is a movie a movie without popcorn," she asked. Niklas let out a playful groan and Sam laughed.

"Oh, no. Never. You just cannot have a movie without popcorn," she answered. The three of them made their way to the family room and their way to (as Niklas and Lizzy called it) "movie land".
