Cry Havoc

“You return!”

He says nothing, but I'm practically giddy with relief.

“Granted, it’s been a few weeks,” I laugh, “but I barely missed your absence, mortal.”

“I’m certain.”

“Yes, well, what do you want? Surely you came for something.” I can’t help the smile that comes to my lips, but his words do well enough to kill it.

“Why did you overthrow the queen?”

“You... You wish to know why I did it?” Unwilling to answer, I attempt to deflect with levity. “First you ask the logistics, and now for the reasons? Are you planning something untoward?”

Of course I should have realized that was the wrong move, but damn me, I cannot predict mortals’ reactions! They are perfectly unpredictable! Loose stones grate across the dirty floor as he turns to leave.

“I was out of line. Don’t go.”

He doesn’t stop walking.

“Please! I’m sorry!” I apologize fervently, shouting at his back and praying to the Stars, as he walks away. “Don’t leave!”

And then he’s gone.

Damn the fates, he’s gone and left me here!
