We Might Just Be

19: I Hope So

“You’re dressed already?” Gerard mumbled as he padded into the small living room of the suite that he had rented for him and Imelda following the wedding. It had been a beautiful night, after the meal, Gerard had been quick to take his girlfriend back up to their room and he didn’t have a single regret. Knowing that Imelda was as in love with him as he was with her made his stomach flip a little and after hearing her say it aloud, he hadn’t been able to resist getting her alone. He had just wanted her to himself for the night.

Imelda, who had her feet propped up on the coffee table, nodded. “I have a meeting this morning” she noted “We can’t all be on vacation for the next month” she added, her green eyes glancing over at him, scanning his body appreciatively.

Gerard rolled his eyes and plopped down beside her, stealing a bite of the croissant which she had in her hand. “I don’t remember you telling me about it” he noted, his voice muffled with the food “Did you mention it last night?” he added.

Imelda shook her head. “You barely let me get a word in edgeways last night” she quipped as she stowed her newly empty plate on the table “Someone get a little hands on after we said a certain three little words to one another” she teased, her green eyes grinning up at him.

Gerard smirked. “What three words would that be, Immy?” he teased.

Imelda rolled her eyes. “Do you really want to hear me say it again? You made me say it like 20 times last night” she grumbled playfully.

“Yes” Gerard noted “I would like to hear you say it again” he added.

Imelda giggled and shook her head, gently kissing his cheek. “I love you, Piqué” she mused softly “Even if you can get on my nerves more than anyone else. You’re sweet and funny and that makes up for almost all of the stupidity” she added with a grin.

Gerard scoffed. “You’re lucky to have me” he announced with a little pout on his face.

Imelda giggled and nodded. “I am very lucky” she noted “And I am also very sorry that I have to leave right now. I have a client that needs me to run through details for their 50th wedding anniversary party next week” she explained as she moved to stand up. She didn’t want to leave, if she could have had it her way, she would have spent the morning snuggled in the sheets with her boyfriend, but she had made the commitment. The older couple wanted to make sure that everything was perfect ahead of the party the following week and Imelda couldn’t let them down just because she had Gerard.

Gerard shook his head. “Don’t be sorry Immy, it is like you said, not everyone has the next month off work like I do” he quipped.

“I know” she sighed “But I just feel bad” she added.

Gerard pondered her words for a second before he looked up, a little smile on his face. “Why don’t I come with you?” he poked.

Imelda tilted her head. “What?” she quipped.

“I could be your assistant or whatever. Please Immy? I wouldn’t get in the way or anything and that way, we could go out together afterwards or go back to mine and resume what we finished last night” he rambled as a little smirk appeared on his face.

Imelda shook her head. “Haven’t you got anything better to do with your time off?” she posed, gathering her hold all and handbag.

“No” he replied “Not with you busy” he added.

Imelda looked at him. “You really want to come with me?” she posed.

Gerard nodded. “Definitely” he noted.

Imelda giggled and shook her head. “Get dressed, something reasonable, we need to be in my car in the next five minutes” she noted, causing him to grin. It was silly, but now that they had said those three words to one another, he couldn’t bear the thought of being parted from her for a few days. He wanted to bask in the feeling for a little while.

“Norman, Cynthia, it is so nice to see you again” Imelda smiled gently as she shook hands with the older couple.

“And you Imelda, though I see you have not come alone” Cynthia smiled, her brown eyes noting the tall man that followed the event planner through their home.

Imelda nodded. “This is Gerard” she commented “He kindly offered to help me out this morning” she added, offering the defender a little smile.

Gerard smiled back at her before he jutted his hand out, politely shaking both of the older couple’s hands. “It is nice to meet you” he mused gently.

Cynthia smiled at him before she took Imelda’s hand, insisting that she had to follow her through to the kitchen were the caterer had left some samples for her taste, leaving Gerard and Norman alone in the living room.

Gerard smiled politely at the older man before he sat down on the couch, his blue eyes tracing the room.

“You and Imelda, huh?” Norman poked, making Gerard jump slightly.

“What?” he posed.

“You and the event planner. I assume she is your girlfriend or, if she isn’t, you are trying to make her into it” Norman grinned.

Gerard’s cheeks warmed a little before he nodded his head. “She’s my girlfriend” he admitted softly.

“You love her?” Norman poked.

Gerard wrinkled his nose, not entirely comfortably with talking to the older man. “I do, sir” he murmured.

Norman smiled. “You two make a sweet couple” he smiled.

Gerard nodded his head. “I like to think so” he muttered “But we are still so new together. Isn’t it your 50th anniversary party that Imelda is planning?” he posed.

Norman nodded. “We’ve been together 51 years, married for 50” he noted.

“That is quite impressive” the defender enthused “I can only imagine how much you love your wife” he added.

Norman smiled. “I love her more and more with each passing day. She is my best friend, my confidant, the mother of my children and I cannot imagine what I would do without her” he enthused softly.

Gerard smiled. He couldn’t help but admire the level of devotion that echoed in the older man’s voice. “You really love her” he grinned a little dumbly.

Norman chuckled and leant over, patting the younger man’s shoulder. “You will know that feeling, one day” he mused gently.

“I hope so” he enthused before Cynthia and Imelda padded back into room.

“How was the food?” Gerard poked as he rose to his feet, offering Imelda a soft look.

“It was wonderful” Imelda enthused “And everything seems to be in order here, so do you want to go?” she posed.

Gerard nodded softly and stood up, offering Norman a polite grin. The older man noted it and winked, soundlessly telling the defender not to let Imelda go.
