We Might Just Be

29: Time

“Imelda?” Gerard whispered, padding a little further into the room “What the hell is going on here? What baby?” he pressed, his blue eyes staring down at Imelda who had almost certainly been crying. Gloria, who had been stood beside her daughter sighed, moving her stare to the tall defender. “Your baby” she murmured.

Gerard frowned. “I don’t have a baby” he muttered.

“No” Imelda murmured “But you are going to have one. The baby we are talking about is our baby Gerard, the one that I am currently carrying” she explained, her eyes not once even daring to look up at him. She was terrified, they had never even spoken about the possibility of a baby becoming part of the equation, and she didn’t want to be looking at him when he told her that it was done. Hearing it would be hard enough without looking at the bitter expression that was almost certainly going to mark his face.

Gerard frowned. “What?” he murmured.

Imelda sniffed. “I…I kind of got pregnant” she stammered, something which made Gerard’s stomach turn a little. Imelda hadn’t stammered around him in months.

“I am going to leave you to it” Gloria murmured before she padded out of the room, leaving her daughter alone with Gerard who stared at the younger woman, his jaw a little slack.

Imelda noted the expression and shook her head. “I didn’t mean to Gerard” she whispered “It just kind of happened. No type of protection is infallible and I guess we were just unlucky, or lucky depending on the perspective you take. I am so sorry to spring this on you” she rambled, shaking her head gently as more and more tears gathered in her eyes.

Gerard swallowed. “You were drinking water” he muttered.

“What?” Imelda squeaked.

“Last week when we went to lunch and talked about your birthday. You were drinking water, something I have never seen you do before. I had suspicions but I didn’t say anything. You knew then?” he pressed.

Imelda nodded. “I have known for a little while” she admitted.

“How long is a little while Immy?” he pressed.

“3 weeks” she murmured.

Gerard scoffed. “That is not a little while, Imelda” he muttered “That is almost a freaking month? Have you seen a doctor yet?” he snapped.

Imelda flinched, but nodded her head. “I am 5 weeks gone” she whispered.

Gerard sighed before he retreated out of the bathroom, sitting himself on Imelda’s bed.

“Gerard, I am sorry” Imelda whimpered as she stepped into the room after him “It just sort of happened” she added.

The defender nodded. He didn’t blame her, he was as much at fault as she was, but it was going to take him a few moments to get his head around it as a notion. They had been careful, neither wanting things to happen to quickly for them, and Gerard was a little more than surprised. He was pretty much gob smacked. Shifting a little, he ran his hand over his face before he peeked up at Imelda, his heart twitching at the sight of her expression. She looked terrified but, even despite a large part of him wanting to, he couldn’t bring himself to move and hold her. He could barely think.

“Gerard?” Imelda murmured “Amor, what are you thinking?” she whispered, sitting down beside him.

Gerard shrugged. “I am shocked, Immy, really shocked” he whispered.

Imelda sighed. “I am sorry” she whimpered.

“Stop saying that. You haven’t done something wrong Im, you’re pregnant” he muttered, his head shaking a little.

“I know, but I feel like it is my fault” she admitted “I should have done better” she added.

“Imelda, this is down to us both” he murmured “We both know how the reproduction system works and we both should have been more careful” he added.

Imelda sighed. “What are we going to do?” she muttered.

Gerard shrugged. “What do you want to do Im?” he posed, his blue eyes glancing at her for a second.

Imelda looked around the room for a moment before she sighed. “I am not giving the baby away, Geri” she murmured “This could be the only chance I get and I am not giving it up. I want the baby” she admitted softly.

Gerard nodded his head. “I expected you to say that” he murmured.

“Then why did you ask?” she posed.

“Because I hoped you would ask what I wanted” Gerard murmured, his voice heavy with a tone that Imelda couldn’t quite recognize. Frowning a little, she took his hand, drawing his attention back to her. “Gerard, what do you want?” she murmured.

Gerard glanced at her before he shook his head. “Time” he admitted gingerly.

“Time?” Imelda whispered “What do you mean by ‘time’?” she posed.

“I mean that I am not going to commit to helping you with this baby right here and right now Imelda” he whispered shamefully “I love you, you know that, but this has only been going on for 5 months, that is barely any time at all and certainly not enough for me to sit here and say that I am with you 100%. Immy, I need to take time, I need to clear my head and I need to think” he explained.

Imelda sniffed. “If you are going to end it, just do it Gerard” she muttered, trying to sound strong.

“I am not saying that” Gerard whispered, his hand curving around her cheek “I am not ending it, I am just saying that this is a lot to take in right now. I need a few days” he whispered, kissing her lips gently.

Imelda stiffened at his touch and pushed him back slightly, her green eyes glaring up at him. “You should go” she murmured “Take your time” she added, her hand pushing him back a little further.

Gerard sighed and walked back towards her, dropping a warm kiss on her forehead. “I love you” he whispered.

“Just not enough to say you’re in this with me” she retorted “Just go Gerard” she muttered.

Gerard sighed before he padded out of the room, his head spinning.
