We Might Just Be

43: A Difference Of Opinion

Throwing her coat onto the hook, Imelda swallowed, not offering a glance back towards Gerard who followed along behind her. She was upset with him, even if she wouldn’t say it to him, and she couldn’t quite bring herself to look at him. It was stupid, it was only a slight disagreement that existed in their relationship, but the idea that Gerard didn’t want to marry her stung. She adored him and wanted nothing more than to share his name, something which Gerard had been clear that he didn’t want.

“Are you not even going to look at me now?” Gerard muttered as he closed the door to their home “Imelda, it is not like I am ending this relationship. I love you and just because I don’t want to get married doesn’t change it. Imelda, mi amor, you mean the world to me, you and bump” he rambled, stepping towards her. She had been curt with him all night, she had barely cracked a smile in his direction and it was starting to upset him. It was only a slight sticking point and he didn’t see why it was such a big deal. They had only been together for 8 months, it wasn’t like marriage was just around the corner anyways.

Imelda shook her head. “I am going to go and take these heels off and go to bed” she mused “You can do whatever you want” she added before she padded up the stairs. Gerard let out an exasperated sigh and followed her up the stairs, catching her as she made her way into their bedroom.

“Can you please just talk to me?” he murmured “You’re acting like this is the most awful thing that has ever happened, Immy. It isn’t that big a deal” he protested.

Imelda scoffed. “It isn’t that big a deal?” she hissed.

“It is not like we were going to get married tomorrow Immy. I just don’t see why we need to go through the whole wedding thing to know that we are in love with each other. We’ve said it enough and I don’t want to waste time or money on a ceremony to prove it” he explained.

“Waste time and money?” Imelda scoffed “Are we a waste of time and money to you?” she posed.

Gerard groaned. “That isn’t what I meant, Im, and you know it. I just want to know why this is such a big deal to you, a girl who has openly admitted that she hates going to weddings that involve her family” he retorted.

“Because it is something I have always wanted” Imelda whispered “I was the little girl who used to play bride with all her stuffed animals. I was bridesmaid 4 times when I was little and 3 times since and I always thought my day would come someday, something which I only got more sure of as you and I got more and more serious. I am head over heels for you, Gerard, I love you more than anything else and to know that you don’t want what I want, hurts me” she mumbled tearfully.

Gerard noted the tears in her eyes and stepped towards her, his thumb gently skirting across her cheekbone. “Immy, I just don’t see the need” he murmured “I thought I did before, but since we started living together, I just don’t anymore. You’re the most important woman in my life, I see you as my long-term partner, but I don’t see the need to make a big deal out of us. This works for me and having seen what Thalia and Cesc went through to get married, I don’t think I could do it. I am sorry” he murmured, moving to hold her closer.

Imelda shook her head and pushed him back slightly. “Then we have a problem” she whispered.

“We don’t have to have a problem Immy” Gerard replied.

“I am not going to change my mind” Imelda admitted “And I can tell from the tone of your voice that you aren’t either. So we have a problem and we have a decision that needs to be made” she explained, her teeth nibbling on her lip.

“Immy, we don’t need to change anything” Gerard whispered, trying once more to pull her into his arms.

“I want to get married and you don’t. That is a pretty big difference in opinion” she whispered.

“What are you saying?” Gerard replied “That we can’t keep this going because we don’t agree on where we are going?” he added, his voice raising in fear and anger. He knew that it was a problem, he wasn’t stupid enough to think that things could be fine, but he didn’t see the need to change anything. Things had been perfect the way they were and if it hadn’t been for his big mouth, there would have been no problem between them.

“I am saying that I think we should…”

“No” Gerard replied sharply “You can’t dump me because I don’t want to get married” he snapped.

“Gerard, this is a real reason to end this” Imelda murmured.

Gerard scoffed. “Can you not see how great we are together Imelda? We’re fucking brilliant as we are and I don’t want to toss that away because I am not prepared to give you what you want. We work, we’re amazing, and I don’t want to give that up” he snapped, stepping towards her so that he loomed over her.

Imelda swallowed and opened her mouth to speak, but was cut off as Gerard leant down, kissing her with the most passion he could muster. He knew it made sense, if they couldn’t agree on where their relationship was heading then there was little to no point in remaining together, but Gerard wasn’t going to let her go without a fight. Imelda was the best thing he had and he didn’t want his child bought into a world where his or her parents were no longer together. “I don’t want to let you go” he whispered “I love you” he added.

“I love you too” Imelda sniffled, her delicate fingers running beneath her eyes and wiping away the makeup smudges “But this is important to me, Gerard, very important and…”

“You don’t know if you can give it up” Gerard sighed.

Imelda swallowed and nodded her head.

“Immy, is there really nothing I can say?” he murmured, moving to lean against the doorframe.

Imelda looked at him for a second before she dropped her head, something which made Gerard’s stomach turn.

“I…uh…I will sleep in the guest room then” he murmured, his voice heavy with a sob that he was trying hard to stifle.

“I should do that” Imelda whispered.

Gerard shook his head and offered her a weak smile before he padded away, closing the guestroom door.

Imelda watched after him and shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks.

She couldn’t believe that it was over.
